Basically makes it a bit easier to see which buddies are online at your user CP
The + symbol is next to members that are on your buddy list

At a cost of $40.00 we can allocate 1 buddy a month with an aim to achieve a "life"

The buddy list does provide indication of when those people are on-line and also acts as a method for sending group PM's - for example I have a list made up of the site admins so that I only have to select that group for a PM.
