I'm going on a long trip in a week (Hobart to Wagga & back). I'm going to change the oil before I go, thinking Castrol EDGE or Motul. Anyone got any recommendations? Thanx KJ

Well I asked Ford to change my oil and oil filter during the 3000-km complementary service. I brought in Castrol EDGE 5W-30. The car is noticeably smoother all-around, engine NVH level is slightly lower.
So I highly recommend Castrol EDGE 5W-30. It's not just oil, it's liquid engineering. |

Mobil 1. Mobil 1. Mobil 1.
In a relatively new engine, you can't go past a synthetic. It will always be better than a mineral oil.

Shell Helix Ultra is also worth a look IMHO. 5W40 IIRC - does that fit in with what's recommended for the Fiesta? I was using it in my Mondeo ST24; the good thing is BigW sell it so you can get it everywhere.

Was thinking synthetic. I'll have to see my mate at repco, see what he can do castrol for.
I have to go to Wagga for uni & driving is cheaper than flying & I can go on bit of a tour.

I had Valvoline Durablend 5W-30 put in for my 15,000km service. Car runs better now than before.
I'd wanted to use Castrol Edge, but money was tight then and the Valvoline cost less at Super Cheap Auto. Two days after I bought it, Super Cheap had a catalog sale and the Castrol Edge was $5 less than what I'd paid for the Valvoline. Bastards.

Changed oil last sunday, engine felt smoother immediately. By tonight the fuel economy seems to have improved, been sitting on 570km to empty every time I start it since filling on thursday & I've done 75km now. Big road trip starts tomorrow so I'll see how I go.

That's good to hear kiwijohn, see.. I wasnt bullcrapping
Im not noticing any improvement in the fuel economy department, just that the engine runs much smoother than before (before the 3000-km service). Did you use Castrol EDGE 5W-30? |

5W-30. That's what it said on the packet, & in the book. Idle is still a bit rough, but better than it was.

I see, yeah I use 5W-30 too, since.... like what you said... since it's the grade that's recommended in the service book.

Very Big in the U.S.
Probably the best synthetic you can get commercially is Redline, but talk to your bank manager first! lol I'll stick to my first recommendation. Mobil1, Mobil1, Mobil1

My Feroza is in getting a gearbox rebuild now- four synchros are stuffed. But I've been driving it around with Redline in it and it was barely noticeable that they were stuffed- in fact before stripping the box the mechanic reckoned all the synchros were fine! The box was noisy and had cold shift problems when I bought it three years ago- Redline was the only oil that gave good shifts and quietened the worn bearing noise down considerably. I'll be running it in all my cars from now on. It would not be worth the expense in your engine IMHO, purely because the oil gets changed so often.

Just be careful in summer running 5W30, usually there are temp ranges shown in the owner's manual that different oil viscositys are suitable for. 5W30 might be a bit too thin if you experience 40+ degree weather?

Chances of getting that hot in Hobart are rare.
