Hello everybody..... I'm new to this and I don't own a ford, but I probably should. Just thought I would put this out there so prospective buyers know what they are getting for their dollar. It's a long story but I will make it as short as I can and still make sense. Bought a 6 tonne 4WD Fuso Truck to tow my caravan around Australia so I could carry what I needed and stay inside the weight restrictions. Anyway, gearbox destroyed itself at 91000ks. Truck was 15 months out side the warranty period but I would have expected it to last a lot longer than that. Lets face it, it's not working that hard, towing a 2.5tonne caravan mainly on good roads. I contacted Fuso to see if they would consider a "out of warranty consideration" as some manufacturers do. WELL... they say it's out of warranty and that's that. They will not consider making any contributions to the repairs. So I am now out of pocket to the tune of $10,000.00. What say you all??? Know anybody who has had any problems with a Fuso???

Could never imagine destroying a truck gearbox with 91 000k on it. Fuso 6T GCM (4.5T GVM) ?
I was only driving down the 60 deg desert track dragging a caravan through the sand when suddenly the gearbox grenaded. Regarding Fuso 4x4, type trucks, I would head over to https://expeditionportal.com/forum/ good information there.

Hey people, not expecting miracles, just putting it out there.Have read reports on the net that the retaining nut on selector shaft fell off and caused gearbox problems on other Fuso's. I was travelling between Darwin and Borroloola and pulled off the road to have lunch. Got back into the truck and it was stuck in gear. Had just traveled over 200ks and there was no indication of any problem, she just locked up. Shipped box to Darwin Fuso agent and they reported the syncro's were destroyed and I would need another box. Like I said $10,000.00 later...... Not dreaming, simply, a bloody gearbox on a truck of this sort should last a damn sight longer than 91000ks.

Is it a manual gearbox or a duonic dual clutch auto....I drive a Fuso 4.5 tonne duonic....the gearbox is a piece of crap...always jerks, slams into gear..sometimes gets stuck in a gear...hasn't blown up yet though...lucky it's owned by my work...I also know of one of these gearboxes failing at just 40000km...quality has definitely gone down under the ownership of Mercedes.

1st question. did you buy this new? or was it already out of warranty when you bought it..
Im thinking it could be an ex rental. If the Syncros were destroyed normally indicates how its driven. ps from what I read its about a 2-3 grand job not 10k.

Thanks Zabatron....it's a manual (5 speed). Truck is FG84D 4WD. Derated to 4.5tonne. I know they had a recall out for the Duonic ...lots of problems there.
Bevsta007.....I bought it new (so as to have no problems HAHA). I am a retired truckie and have looked after it from day one. It has also had all of it's services done by Fuso dealers/agents. Yes you might get repairs done in the big smoke for a couple of grand...try getting things done when your out in the bush in the NT. Exchange box from Fuso agent in NT (RGM Maintenance P/l Darwin) cost $8646.19. The rest was towing and labour costs. The breakdown occurred on the 30/06/2018 and I finally got back on the road on the 27/08/2018, add on accommodation, hire car fees and lost time and it's even more. I looked after this truck simply for the reason of not wanting to get stuck in the middle of nowhere, well, it happened, and should not have. Fuso have just stuck their head in the sand and don't want to know me. Thanks for nothing Fuso. |

I see there was a recall of the Duonic dua-clutch. (different from yours I know) but see if you can find supporting evidence of others with the same problem. If yours is an isolated case then 15 months out of warranty, I'm afraid you dont have much of a case.

Ring the ACCC and see what they say, you might get partial compensation. How long was the warranty period? If 5 years, forget it imo. I wouldn't write to them yet. You'd think something must have been left in there to chew out all the syncros?

Where I worked in NZ I recall a twin steer Mack Ultraliner that hardly anyone could change gears in.

The chance of getting any manufacturer to pay 15 months out of warranty is 0%. Unless it had really low kms then they may assist with some payment but over 90k isn't low by warranty standards.
If you are talking about the mainshaft nut coming loose I have seen that happen on other vehicles and it seems to be a problem with a lot of other models over the years. |

90k on a Truck means it isn't even run in.

Contact fair trading.
Basically the truck wasn't fit for purpose, and you wouldn't have bought the truck had you knew the potential for the gearbox to die so early. Warranty means little when i comes to major failures.

ACCC covers products that die unreasonably early even if the manufactures warranty has expired. I would expect the transmission to last more than 91,000kms in any vehicle.

Thanks for the heads up Ben.....Have been in contact with ACCC and made formal complaint. Your right.....they say "it would be reasonable to expect more than 91000ks". Keep you informed.

Key here is if it was serviced by a Fuso dealer its whole life? Answer seems to be no. If it had been serviced by them then yes you probably would have gotten some assistance. True story.
