It's used in the sedans for the boot realease button and and the fuel door release button. But since ute's don't have either (manual fuel door), it is just replaced with that blank panel.
On my ute, it has the driving light switch in it, cause there was no way i drilling through the dash Here's a pic of HLC's sedan that i found

Another question. When you pop your boot open on the Falcons and Fairmonts, does it open by itself or do you have to lift it?

mine doesnt lift it self but its covered in sound deadening..
on the new bentleys and i THINK Some lexus shut your doors them selves (when your door is 99% closed)

No, it doesn't lift itself. Mine's covered in sound deadening also, and didn't lift itself before that either.
Apparently, according to someone selling them on eBay, the Ghia badge rotates to reveal a keyhole on Fairlanes, but mine doesn't.
