Default Tyres

I know, another tyre thread.

But I need to replace the boots on the Tickford 17's

I currently have the Dunlop 3000a's. They were great at first, but around their half life they became very noisy and a bit loose at the back.

I just want tyres that are not noisy and give good grip, without wearing too quick.

I've read here about Maxxis and Hankook. Any others worth considering?

Toyo Transpaths. Not a super high performance tyre, but very quiet, good grip and good wear. My XR6 has them. Didn't have a good experience with Kuhmo Ecstas, started well then went sharply down hill. Made noises I thought were driveline related. Problems solved with the Toyos.

I have the maxxis and I think they are great. Good all round grip and not noisy at all. Not a bad price as well.

I purchased 2 sets of Maxxis MAV1's and whilst they give good grip (for me anyway) in all conditions and are wearing well, they are one heck of a noisy tyre.

I put Roadstone (Nexen N7000's) on the SR and much quieter and the same if not better grip.

I do acknowledge however that the MAZ1 Maxxis tyres are far better in every respect. If you go a set of those you'd be fine I expect.

Hope that info was helpful.

All the best with your deliberations.

I've got Firestone Firehawk WideOvals and i have found them excellent. Great grip in both the wet and dry, no noise (on the roads around here, along the Gold Coast HWY it was a bit different but so were the tyres on my in-laws car).

Yep also got a set of Wideovals on the AU and have found them excellent value for money as well and superb performance in wet and dry and with no road noise.

This is interesting because Maxxis market the V1 as their "comfort" performance tyre. If you listen to Maxxis , The V1 is supposed to be quieter than the Z1...

Which Maxxis though? I put MA-551's on the front when I needed a cheap tyre as a stop-gap, they aquaplane horrendously and are much harsher-riding in 225/55/16 than the 225/50/16 Falkens that came with the wheels. I have heard of other Maxxis tyres rating very well in independent tests, I just don't know which ones they are.

Depndes on how much you want to spend. I do know the Avon ZZ3's are very good but at $595 a tyre they would want to be.

Check out the Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3 235 45 17
They have placed highly in & won independent tyre tests
I have had 2 sets in a row
They are quiet balance well & are the best tyre I have driven on in wet so far
Next time I would be considering the Dunlop Sport Max or the Hankook K104 which have both had good reviews

Cheers

I have Firenza tyres, made by Sumotire. Excellent noise levels and have heard of mileage of up to 80,000km from a set of well serviced tures is not un common.

I paid $169 per corner for 225/45/17's.

Grip levels, very good in both wet and dry.

If you have the dough, fork out for Bridgstones Adrenaline's. Awesome tires they are. Otherwise if money is an issue, the Firenza's are my choice.

I used Federal ss595s on my XR6 Turbo which provided better grip, quieter ride and same wear as Dunlop SP3000s and were only $150 each.

Alot of people have reccomended the Maxxis MAZ1 to me, (also did well in a motor/wheels (?) test recently) I've had Hankook K104s in 16 and 17" and they're great tyres, great grip in all conditions, they are very predictable wet or dry and pretty quiet. Nice looking tread and sidewalls (if you're into the 'look' of the tyre) [I am] the only downside to them is soft sidewalls.

Thanks, guys for your input.

Can't seem to find the Maxxis MA-Z1 except on the US website. Bobjane only have the MA-V1's which are a totally different tread pattern.

Can someone explain the tyre rating eg; 93w, 94v, 97y etc.

Keep trying to find the Z1's...

Bob Jane put this flyer out http://www.bobjane.com.au/Corporate/...-Z1_wheels.pdf, maybe print it out, take it to the store & refuse to leave until they find some for you... :

I got my Maxxis Z1's from Bob Jane, so they certainly have them, and get them down to at most $175 per tyre for 235 17's. At the moment I've got Federal SS595's on the front of my car, and no complaints about them either, especially at ~$135 per tyre. I don't really drive aggressively, so can't comment on that aspect of grip, but they're as good or better than any of the Dunlops, Bridgestones or Falkens that I've used before in terms of noise level, wear and grip for 'normal' driving. Hope that helps.

I have used Dunlop 3000a, Bridgestone GIIIs, and Yokohama C-drives on the AU.

The clear winner out of these 3 is the Yokohama. More grip than the Dunlops, almost as much as the GIII, and a LOT quieter than either.

I've got another set of Dunlops on the car at the moment because I wore out the C-drives and bought a second hand set of BA wheels that had near-new Dunlops already fitted. Compared to the C-drives, the Dunlops are rubbish. Less grip, harsher ride, and a lot more noise.

The really big advantages of the C-Drives over most other 235/45x17 tyres are in the areas of comfort and noise. They make a big difference, and if low noise is what you are after you really should think about them.

Another for the Toyo's here, seems to be a great all round tyre, although they aren't the cheapest out there.

MA-Z1's ... Tyre's and More in Richmond = $160 a tyre.
235/45R17 ... they have been great ... nice and quiet.
Grip in the wet and dry are awesome.
And they handle load really well ... usually a 1T load really deforms a tyre badly ... not these guys. Probably due to the 97 load rating compared to most others that are 94.

After really working these out lately with work ... I rate them highly ... especially for the price they are.

My rubber is getting pretty worn too, so I just spoke to BJs.

The following prices apply this month, fitted and balanced:

Maxxis V1 $155
Maxxis Z1 $209
Pirelli Dragon $229
Yokohama C-drive $275

The V1 looks like pretty compelling value for money, apart from the question mark regarding noise that GK mentioned.

I'm thinking of giving the Pirellis a try.

I have heard good reports from the Pirelli Dragons, they look awesome, and grip awesome. If you can afford it, I reckon opting for the Pirelli's is the way to go.
