Talking Airbox mod (kind of)..

Well been toying with my AU (again) (damm mod bug)
I have a dual fuel so have wasn't able to muck around to much.
So havng picked up an EF (I think) system from the wreakers I have:
Swaped over the lid for the larger bell mouth (around 80mm), got a lenght of storm water pipe and cut to fit.

If it runs OK over the next few days I'll give it a paint touch up

and

i'd be careful with the PVC cause it can melt and catch fire when too hot. get some stainless steel pipe. cant be too expensive

remember the rest of the intake is also plastic so if the pvc melts then so is the rest of the intake.

Actualy, no, the rest of the intake is heat resistant ABS resin. PVC is not heat resistant, but should be OK.

wrong.

The intake is ABS plastic, and the PVC is, PVC.

whilst they are both plastics they have different chemical properties and melting points etc.

PVC has a lower melting point and can be flammable.

ABS is a tougher more durable plastic and you'll find that the new manifold on the FG falcon is a ABS composite that can withstand high temps.

I've got a pod in my box, like this...

well not exactly like that because I've refitted the lid, loosely, with the square plate removed from the back corner, and the pipe goes through the hole where the square plate was.

The result is that I still have the cold air intake and an enclosed pod. The gaps around the loose-fitting lid and 3" pipe allow air to bleed out of the airbox under trailing throttle however, so the balance pipe to the LPG converter is no longer required.

I didn't have any 3" PVC lying around, so I bought a couple of $30 metal pipes and the silicon joiner.

It makes for nice ear candy. Inside the car it sounds like it's got a bigger, less restrictive exhaust, but as far as I can tell there's no extra noise outside.

Tried that on my EL once. You will get a nice hole in the bottom of that pipe from the bolt on top of the shock tower.

You are correct Russell, it sits right on top. Super cheap has a flexable pipe but I'm not sure how long (or the dia) it is.
Might pop into a muffler guy and see what I can get.
3inch or 80mm is the size correct?

Supercheap pipe is 3" and is plenty long but a muffler place will do a pipe for about the same price.

I got my 3" pipe from SuperCheap as well.
The Silicon bends they sell are a tad pricey too.

http://www.txs.com.au/silicon/contact.htm
that mob sells good quality silicon hoses etc
give em a look in

also for piping try your local diesel spares(we have a place called Queensland Diesel Spares up here.. they sell parts for truck intakes etc which are big)...

was also just thinking if you wanted to be really cheap
you could head down to your local TRUCK wreckers and pick up lots of piping and stuff
at budget prices lol

you will find it will make a difference to throttle response Blueprint and the bonus of only doing it from that elbow is its on the "COLD" side of the motor with the plastic pipe which wouldnt transfer heat as bad to the air inside it
plus theoreticallly it would accellerate the air due to the fat to thin piping as it cruises toward the t/b

good luck

you don't need to if you remove the squate plate the lid is identical to the AU one . the difference in the size is in the adaptor in the plate

you just put an e-series airbox lid onto your au one, and run a 3inch pipe from it.

Cool

you can modify the EL/AU lid very easily. The EF lid is different because it has an internal pipe. Autospeed found this was a 38% restriction in there latest test.

I read a little while back that it was meant to provide a slight improvement over the stock AU lid. It had something to do with pulling air in from the middle of the filter. Something like that anyway...

here is what i have done the second pic is the initial fitting before painting my exhaust guy was able to get the flange for the airbox ready made so he just had to bend and weld the pipe I went to this extra trouble as it looks more like it could be a factory fit
