Thumbs down A/C Compressor

Hi guys,

I started a similar thread about replacing the A/C compressor and what it would involve. Yesterday I took my car down to get this done thinking that all it needed was the compressor replaced (4 bolts) and a regas, hmm say 100 - 120bucks. Well no they said I had to replace the accumulator which gets rid of all the condensation in the system which you have to replace everytime you replace the compressor. this accumulator cost me 160 bucks and needs to be replaced every 24 months (Yeah Right!!) Anyway it took 3 hours and 280 bucks later and now my aircon is good. Just thought I would tell yo guys just so you know what is really involved. Mine started as the compressor was ticking when the aircon was on. :togo:

Accumulator? I've always known them to be Reciever Dryers... thats what our suppliers call them too... and they sell for less than $100... plus not needing to replaced at such unrealistic intervals... Ok... i'm not an Aircon specialist... I'm a radiator specialist... same suppliers though...

My cousin is an auto elec. who does air con and last he told me was the environmental statutes required them to be changed every 4 years. He dates them on fitment and if he gets one in undated he is supposed to replace before regassing. I have seen these units become porous over time as well.

AU compressors will rattle for a long time and not die
Mine has been rattling for 350000km out of 550000km
Still nice and cold air but

Yeah mine was really cold when it was rattling, now I think its gradually getting back to what it was. I was worried that I might be out of the middle of nowhere it might of failed. I was scared for no reason clearly... lol

No guarantees how long anything will last Tickford, but they will rattle for a while, then when they start crunchy grinding sounds, turn off a/c quick and you can still drive home. Only once has one seized so bad and suddenly it tore the belt off and wrapped it around everything, took 3 hours with a stanley knife to cut it all off!
