The Flash tunner no doubt, but get a good tunner that know's what they are doing, and get a custom tune for your vehicle.

Flash tunner no doubt still, but if it is 2nd hand, before you buy it make sure it has been unlocked, I'm not sure on these thing's but I have heard stories about 2nd hand flash tunner's and the new owner's not being able to use them because they still carry the memory from before, other's on here will be able to elobrate alot more on this.

Basically, if the previous car hasn't been returned to stock then the box won't be able to flash your car with a new tune. The box is only capable of flashing one car at any given time.

It's designed to stop people from buying one and flashing every Tom Dick and Harry's car.

So if you are buying a secondhand one, make sure the car it is coming from has been returned to stock before you buy it, because if it isn't, it's useless to you.

Get rid of the chip completely - it is old technology and while a few tuners still deal with them the majority don't. Some people still use them but after my experiences with the Unichip (so yes I am very biased) they are not worth it.

Get the flasher unit from the BF and have it unlocked (any tuner can do it) or better still get the bloke who owns it now to have it unlocked before you buy it. You can't use it on your ute until it's done.

From there, you've got 2 choices - you can use it to tune your ute as it is now and see what results you get, or, going by your other threads, if you've got some ideas in the pipeline for it, wait until those are done and then tune it. You will have to have it re-tuned after every mod you do (power ones anyway) for it to be totally effective.

You can't really give an estimate of what kW you'll gain from getting it flash tuned but what I can tell you is that it will be a different car to drive. The flash tune allows you to change everything from timing and fuel right through to the shift points for the auto box (if you have one). It is worth doing as long as you have a good tuner as galaxy xr8 mentioned - the technology is only as good as the person using it.

Hi so if its been reset before he sold the car.... Does that mean i can purchase plug in and it might work for my au 2 xr8 without the need to be sent to capa or a tuner?
Does it only need to be custom tuned to get extras out of it?
Thanks heaps for your help peter

yes you can use it straight on your car if it has been unlocked, because the tuner doing the work will be able to load base maps for your ute and go from there, just like they would if it was being used on the BF.

The tuner is the key - once you have the box, you need to get onto a few tuners, tell them what you want from the car, and then they'll be able to help you out.

Sorry I should add just to be clear here - the flash tuner isnt the thing that changes how your car runs etc - it's more like a disk drive etc. The thing that makes the difference is the tune that is loaded into the flash tuner and then put into your car. You can't just plug it in and use it straight away - you need to get a tuner to create the tune that suits your car first.

Just wanted to point out that there is a lot of difference between a chiptouque chip and a unichip, a unichip is a piggyback computer, it modifies the signals going into the engine management to retune the car, at which point on an au has problems due the engine management self learning that changes the program and learns ways around spots of it.

The chiptouque chip plugs into the bottom of the ecu and does what a flash tune does except it does not have all the functions of the flash tune but it does have everything capable of tuning and running your engine perfectly, if the chip touque chip is to suit your car and mods then why not put it in, it will be a dam sight better than nothing. As for custom tunes with a flash tune, you can do the same with a chip touque chip but it has to goto them directly to be done to your car, i think they charge $600 to do so if you have the chip. And not bagging any tuners but to me personally i think chiptouque have been tuning these efi cars a lot longer than all these guys tuning flash tuners. Also i have a mate who has one on an AU XR6 and he is absolutely wrapt with it, his car is completely standard and chip was ordered thru mail.

If you put the chiptouque chip in and run the flash program the chip will over ride the flash tune and therefore the flash tune wont work until you pull the chip out. you can get generic tunes for the flash tuner, but if you already have the chip then you may as well put that in and leave the flash tuner till your ready for a proper dyno tune.

BPT (site sponsor ) do some excelent generic tunes for $ 185 for forum members. just tell them what you car has mod wise and the get a tune they have already done and load that on. not quite a custom tune but close . give them a call to discuss it
chips are a compromise flashing is far more varsatile

Most places in Vic charge about the $600 mark for a custom tune.

As for the chips they are evil evil things. Evil.

I just told you that the flash tuner is the better option.

Why not wait until you have all the bits on your car and then get it custom tuned. Makes more sense to me.

I have the unichip in mine and have had it since I purchesed the vehicle new, I have not had any problem's what so ever and I am impressed with the result's and the ecomomy it get's now, but having said that, I would go the flash tune anyday, the only reason I didn't was that back in 2001, the flash tune was not available, and the unichip was the way to go, but these day's the flash tune offer's so much more that any unichip or other chip could offer, If I was to keep my vehicle for a long time I would get rid off the unichip and change to the flash tune but as I havn't had a problem with it and don't really want to fork out more $$$$ for something that is allready doing the job, just no where near as good. forget about the chip's and go flash tune.

is it just me or is the same question being asked about 5 times here?

for my money - ditch the chip, get the flash box and just wait until you have done the engine to use it.
