At What Point would You Sell Your V8

With the Price of petrol getting Very High I am Wondering a few things, Such as at what Fuel Price would You say ok time to sell the V8 & get a Smaller vehicle.

And at this Point would you go to a 6, Diesel or 4 Cylinder?

Lastly at what point would the Price of Large vehicles Fall because of lack of Demand?

I would sell my V8 if petrol increased to around $3.00 per litre and if my salary stayed the same. I wonder if there would be much demand for old V8s?

I would consider a 4 cyl but more likely get another V twin!

I went for the last option. I want to buy a V8 Range Rover soonish, so thought I'd hold off for a while and see if they become noticeably cheaper.

but ins aying that my next car will be a V8 4X4 of some description, but it will jsut be a weekend warrior, i have a 92 Lancer and a Kawasaki Z750 for daily Commuting

I've already gone the LPG route on the EL (9 years ago) and bought the diesel 307 back in '06. Although, the price of diesel has crept up to $1.70/L here, but getting ~900km per 60L tank is OK.

I'm not liking paying over $40 for a tank of LPG every week and over $80 for a tank of diesel every 3 weeks...

The only reason why LPG is cheap at the moment is that it is not taxed and excised as heavily as petrol.

This will change.

Yep. In 2011 when they start adding excise. At this point in time, in 2015, the maximum will be 12.5c/L, which is still a lot less than the excise on petrol. We won't go in to the issue of GST on top of the excise. Another can of worms there...

It might be more expensive, but you sure do get a lot more for your money when it comes to small 4cyl diesel engines. It costs about the same to run the 2.0L diesel 307 compared to the 4.0L LPG Falcon. It varies as to which one is cheaper depending on the movement of fuel prices for the respective fuels. Currently, I think the Falcon is cheaper considering diesel has recently spiked in price.
As for driving, sure, the Falcon is quicker, but the Peugeot certainly makes up for it in the torque department. The 2.0L HDi has nearly the same amount of torque as the current BF XT 4.0L motor. Not to mention, a slightly smaller towing capacity, but the 307 is a manual and the XT auto, so if the 307 was auto, I'm sure it would possibly have the better towing capacity (braked trailer).

Having said that, I've never owned a V8, but if I did buy one in the future, it would be on LPG quick smart to save on fuel costs. But then again, I'm in different minds as to what sort of car to get next. A 6cyl diesel ute for towing (gotta get the boat buying past the wife first)? A XR6T for fun? But that is a couple of years away now...

Not thinking of ditching the V8. Not at this point anyway. Young, disposable income, no mortgage no rent, plus the g/f loves the XR so its a no brainer for me!

The price of fuel is what is stopping me from buying one right now, every time I get going it creeps into my head, so I'll stick to the 6 for the time being.

I'm tossing up whether or not I should fill up today or risk it and wait till tomorrow for a drop in price...

Realistically...If I didn't have my V8 I'd have a 6 cyl car as I need a larger size car.

The difference between the economy of a 6 versus my 8 is an additional 20-25% fuel usage...Seeing as though I only drive around 150-200kms a week price is not an issue.

Costs me around $80 to fill my car,a year ago it cost $70.

I am not that fussed about $10.

I only use it on the weekends and have a 4 cylinder hiace van for work,so petrol prices are not an issue.

It would have to get extremely expensive for me to even consider selling my V8.

The cost of fuel won't make me sell my V8, only me getting bored of it will.

But my next car will be either a diesel or a 4cyl and probably another brand, just to be different. I've only ever owned Falcons for my drivng life, 2 6 cylinders (XC Sedan and EA sedan) and 4 V8s (XA coupe, XC GXL, EF, and BA) over 11 years so it's time for a change. I would still want a V8 project or weekender though I reckon, but it would have to be something special and different.

Never sell the V8 as it is not a daily driver. The Magna though would be put on gas as I need it as a family car if the price got to $2. I would also buy a scooter for myself to ride to work.

Wow, I can't believe all the members on here that only have a V8 for a weekender.

Mines my everyday car (I only own 1 anyway) and on LPG, but I only do 350kms a week. But I am paying it off as fast as I can so I can drive it on petrol more (it drives better, more power, etc).

I agree with flappist. Those who flood the market with LPG conversions etc, will make the government capitalize on the movement.

Until they allow a water powered car to be released on the market, there is no real way of avoiding high fuel prices.

The government wont allow anything on they market they cant profit on and control so its tuff t!tt!es for us.

Back on topic, I gave up my EB Xr8 when fuel was approaching the $1 mark 4 years ago. I didnt want to do it, but if it meant family suffered with daily living expenses, it was a no brainer for me.

Price of fuel is least of my worries compared to the wife and 3 kids LOL.....
My T3 is my daily, whats $130 a week in fuel compared to the 4 costs above !

Upon purchasing a V8 you already know what your in for, doesn't matter if you bought one years ago or not always costed more in fuel. Modern day 8's are more fuel effiecent whats the worry

Luckily i dont drive the XY everyday...... So i wouldn't be worried whether fuel was $1.70 or $3.70....

But my daily is a gassed 8 so again not too fussed what the petrol movement is. That is, until the government decides to further cash in on LPG and by then i will probably be putting around in a 4pot diesel

Im majorly concrened about fuel prices and my chugging V8. So much so that im driving like an old lady to get the most I can out of the tank. Im contemplating (not too much though) selling the V8 and buying an xr5 focus... I really cant see it happening before $2.00 a litre though...

When fuel is $3/L, it will cost me $15 more to travel 100km's (in town) than it would in a 6cyl Falcon. I don't think I could live with that.

Whilst the availability of the money is not an issue for me, I would struggle to justify (on 500km a week) wasting $75/wk or $325/mth or $3900/yr on the indulgence of having a nice note.

Another issue is that all the falcons have the same size petrol tank. While this does not affect the price/litre it does affect the range and distance between fillups. N.B sedans not utes.

I could not drive to Brisbane and back in either my GT-P or F6 on a tank full which meant I had to fuel at one of the 24hr scalpers and pay at least 5c (15c on long weekends) a litre more which over 100,000km is many many cartons of stubbies........

It all adds up.

3 v8's in my driveway, plus a 6.

Between my wife and I we do about 60k per year.

Cost is getting huge, as I have a bloody great boat and 250hp outboard on top of the cars.

Once fuel gets to over 3 bucks a lt, we'll HAVE to look to rationalise the cars.

It's just getting ridiculous - especially seeing as in two weeks in just one of the cars we've tipped $675 worth of fuel into it!

I'd not sell my v8, i'd buy one of the ebay motorised kits for the mountain bike, 70cc two stroke. 2L per 100 kms. for around town commuting sounds good to me!
