Default $110 Fine for having my fog lights on

Well last night after a very long day at Heathcote drags and even longer drive home, i got pulled over at a boos bus @ the hoppers crossing exit, as i was being breath tested another cop walked up to me and asked why i had my fog lights on, i explained ( calmly and nicely ) that i was driving through some bad rain just past Kilmore and towards the city on my way home from Heathcote. Asks for my license, walked towards the bus and came back and handed me a $110 fine.

Is this absolutely stupid or what? There not bright or distracting in my opinion, I've had many many BA/BF's with fog lights on behind me and they don't distract me nor are they too "bright" as the cop informed me.. those damn halogen lights are more annoying!

Just another Victorian Police revenue raiser?

I say more fines for foglights!
I swear, the next stupid NNNN i have to sit behind with their rear mounted fog light on in daytime, nightime, or any time that isn't fog will find a set of steelcaps through their tail lights.

As a truckie that spends a LOT of time driving up and down the highway, I really am sick of seeing some idiot with their extremely bright fog lights on driving towards me, when I flash them, they flash me back as thought I don't realise they are on low beam.
Fog lights on, even during the day, when there is no fog around is extremely dangerous. If I see enough people with fog lights blinding me, it gives me a headache and makes it harder for me to do my job. And you'll find most other truckies agree.

There have been many threads on this, it's illegal to have them on except in fog.
This is the first case i have heard of actual enforcement.

it's a bit harsh, but it is the law, I have read about them cracking down on quite a few forums.

wrong they are called fog lights but the law states they can only be used in adverse weather conditions no mention of fog. heavy rain can reduce visibility too and fog lights are actuall legal for this situation ( in NSW at least)

They arent fog lights, they are "Driving" lights on our falcons.. Its in our manuals somehwere.. And there is no distracting proper rear fog light thing like on many 4wds on falcons or commodores.. Yes just revenue raising, I really dont see the point in having them on cars if as soon as we use them we can get a fine for it.. make them legal somehow!

And you, my freind, are WRONG. If they where driving lights, they would go off when you switch to low beam. Simple as that.

When I find it in the manual ill post up what page they are on.. Im at work at the moment.. ;-)
Yeah understand that, i mean at the end of the day people are getting fined for it so I aint going to fight the law. But seriously, if that was the worst thing we see on our roads then we would all have nothing to worry about! Nowa days I dont want the added attention to my car so never really use them. But see people getting fined for it (especially on holdens and fords) a little overkill, and just simple revenue raising.

They are fog lights, you poor ignoramus!

Driving lights are fitted after market and are required to be wired so that they can only be used when your headlights are on High Beam.

Its great that people are getting fined for using their fog lights when there is no fog - more of it I say!!

Not sure about everyone else but I also use my lights to be seen by other road users aswell. I always have my lights on when I am on country roads, whether its day time, night time, foggy, sunny, raining, whatever. If something can be helped to be seen, like lights, I use it. Just my 2c.....

I'll give you a pat on the back, not sure about some others here though. Don't think I would go as far as to damage someones car to make a point though.

Hopefully word will spread about it being illegal and we will see a few less foggies switched on in broad daylight.

I'm sure I've seen some of the names in this thread that are "pro fog" pop in threads bagging ricers. . . Ahh, nevermind.

When the rain is that bad that i have whippers on full blast and still cant see? don't really see how that's "stupid" to have the lights on so i can see somewhat better. I don't see how my opinion is worth squat and yours is though..

Edit: Actually even the lady cop that breath tested me said it was a bit harsh after he walked off?

Ill take the fine and cop it on the chin, just think in the circumstances its a bit harsh.

if you still cant see with the wipers on full blast then why bother with the fog lights? its not going to make any difference anyway...

Good on the police for enforcing this... i hate cars behind or oncoming with their fog lights on its annoying but distracting!

Are you seriously expecting anyone to believe that BA front fogs helped you see better in torrential rain? I had a BA for 4 years, I know how far the fogs project, if you relied on them at all to see infront of you in torrential rain, you would have hit whatever it was that the front fogs illuminated before you could have done anything about it.

Being one that's dazzled by fog lights, I'm all for the police enforcing it. If the rain is that bad, pull over.

I'm pretty sure high beams and fog lights are all going to improve visibility.. didn't realize this was going to turn into a storm. I always thought they were driving lights not fog lights ( pretty sure when i bought the car the for rep told me they were driving lights! ), and honestly never knew you couldn't have them on. Mind you i never have them on during the day or at night for no reason.

Think some of you are being a bit harsh saying I'm stupid for thinking they would help me see better.

I never suggested that you were stupid for thinking they would help, just that they would allow you to see something for a very split second before you ran it over if you were relying on the fog light for vision in torrential rain.

I was told the same thing, and I believe I read it somewhere in the owners manual, although im still working :-( so I cant check, if you have a spare minute, look in there for me.
I suppose if you were fined then obviously not, but im sure its hard printed in there somewhere..

Why not turn them off when the rain stopped???? My tip is they were on long before you hit the rain( like when you first started it) Good on them i say.

If the rain is that bad it's time to pull over for safety, fog lights or otherwise, in Adelaide we have hoons running around in Jap imports with lights blazing in the city, still, a warning would have been more appropriate.
