Default We Dont Need To Be Babysat!

I've just heard on the news that the government is trialing 100 gps units which will be fitted to cars which judge what speeds your doing, beeping if you break the speed limit and maybe even forcing the car to slow down. Depending on the results of this experiment they will decide whether or not this system will be compulsory for everyone.

I can imagine if it ends up being compulsory traffic cops will be made basicly redundant in pullin over speeding drivers if the government starts using the devices to transmit data whether a car was speeding and by how much to send out fines which i wouldnt be surprised if this government chooses to do...

i nearly choked!

if traffic cops are made redundant, they then could be utilised in other areas where they are needed

i love driving as much as the next person. i love my coupe almost as much as my wife, family and friends - certainly more than me, but i would have gladly put it in a crusher to save my friends life from a traffic accident when a hoon crashed into him

it would probably take years to get vehicles to where we see in movies depicting the future, but i am sure we would find ways to enjoy ourselves even if our cars were totally safe and boring. i understand that we should not need to be babysat, but some people do and i would rather see this than senseless carnage on the roads

having said that, the government especially the state government with speed camera money could do alot more pro-active things to make driving much safer, but that would spend their revenue where it should be spent, so that will never happen

maybe this idea could be implemented to L and P plate drivers, or, offenders of serious driving offenses.... i hate seeing car accidents on the news regarding a young P plate driver losing a life for being silly and doing silly speeds (even tho we have all done it in our time no doubt) so maybe this could be a handy tool to slow down P platers and constant offenders.

im not agreeing with it for everyone to have one fitted tho as not everyone needs to be "babysat", but i do feel it could be a handy thing in other areas and help reduce the road toll in some way, ie... helping reduce SOME speed, if the technology allows

The civil libertarians would never allow it, talk about BIG BROTHER watching over your shoulder. It's already happening through the back door. Have a look at the woolies rewards card, it keeps track of all your spending habits re food, grog and fuel if you're silly enough to have one.

lol i really dont get it, why's everyone blaming p platers ? ive been through this a million times and it still shiats me, just because a few idiots that just got their p's that dont know how to drive think that they are mad things then jump into their dads or such rexi or skyline or high powered cars and think they can drive we all suffer the consiquences, whereas wherever i go on the road, i stick to the speed limit and you see some old fart swinging through lanes speeding etc etc, man blame yourselves and not all of us because a bunch of retarted stupid kids, i dont feel sorry for them, for that now i have to wait another 2 years to drive what i would of liked to drive SAFELY... GRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.....

Nah wont ever happen. It would be about 20minutes between it being introduced and someone posting on the internet how to bypass the thing.

I would just go out and by a 60's Falcon. Like to see it try and tell an old school carby fed V8 not to speed.

No state Government would allow it because they stand to lose too much fine revenue, which many of them have already factored into future budgets. Crazy as it may seem. If everybody kept to the speed limit for 12 months and no speed camera or laser fines were issued, the state Govt budgets would be significantly squeezed. In an economic sense, every time a driver gets a days pay stolen for exceeding 6 kph over the limit or whatever it is, we are giving the govt what it has budgeted for as a necessity. Speeding has become almost a pre budgeted economic necessity for the governments !!!!!!!!!!!!!.

No govco would ever introduce this because it would be certainly ejection from office and maybe not regaining it for generations , and who ever did gain office would have to remove it very quickly

well if that do bring it in i will be the first one line for a new computer or tune to remove it, but yeh as somone said above it will be like 20minutes from when its released till someone has a pathc or bypass.
i dont really like the idea and i thin it could cause more accidents, i rather not be limit to the speed limit when i over take, i would rather get over there and back in alittle time as possible thanks and if that means i break the speed limit then so be it..... sorry but slow drivers cause more accidents then the one speeding

obey, pay, no partay today.

being monitored 24/7 will make the perfect society. exept for all the depression and people wondering what a life is. Fix the roads FFS and focus on catching the real criminals.

Yeah we have a constitution but when it was written they forgot all the important basic rights like freedom of speech and right to a fair trial etc. Most of our constitution is about Government processes and State rights.

The only thing they have remotely like a right is about the "just terms compensation for acquisition of property" which the movie The Castle made reference to.

We are one of the most unprotected peoples in the world. The Government could effectively pass a law permitting torture of citizens and banning of criticising the Government and it would be legally sound.

then really what is the point of this test at all? is it just a scare tactic or are they just trying to antagonize the public?

A lot more....multiply the national car accident deaths (including those where other drugs like alcohol are a factor) by 10 and you're in the ball park...just to put things in perspective.

i think you could put it into cars of those who are frequent speeding or loss of licence offenders...but like has been said, they'll find away around it, or use another car.

IF the technology did come out,
IF the 100 tests showed the drivers were speeding and racking up 100s in fines they will certanly bring it out! it could end up being a bigger revenue raiser then speed cameras!

i do find myself creeping 3km above the limit even when concentrating on the roads.....if evey time i exeeded 3km the speed limit or ## when conering i got a fine, it would be huge revenue....for a while anyway...when people woke up to it and declined speeding they will phase them out and go back to cameras.

simply rewiring/removing it wouldnt be the answer.

what if the police could use their computers to search for your GPS signal (only requires you rego and registered gps freq which they would already know so they can fine you when you speed) if your car was displayed as parked at home when they had you pulled over on the side of the road you would face huge fines! or if you wired it through a switch so when they pulled you over you can flick it back on it would show that you appeared in the given location and have had it turned off!
