After years of reading this and the other forum as an outsider, I finally joined the ranks on Tuesday. Flew to Adelaide at 0635 (arrived 0835), had done the deal and left by 1030. Drove to Wagga that day and made excellent time- 950km or so in under 10 hrs including some short stops. Some great mirages out on the Hay planes etc (see below). It's amazing how vast this country is and how much "nothingness" there is...Gorgeous sunset on Tuesday as we got to Wagga. Did the remaining ~400km on Wed, also in great time. 1383km all up, 14.5hrs including breaks (30mins lost crossing the border/time zone)
Car is exceptional- August build 02 XR8, only ~67,000km on it when I picked it up (almost 69,000 now). Paint and panels are close to perfect and it goes like a rocket. Fuel is quite good- first fill up was 12.1 (Adelaide, hills, lots of overtaking), next was 11.1 (High average speed, overtaking) last fill up at Gundagai we turned the AC off and with a DTE of 400km we had 375km on the clock. That works out to be 8.8L/100km! This car has already exceeded all my expectations- it's now very obvious why people are so attached to the AU. |

Good looking XR low K's well worth the flight for that car. Hay plains a boring bit of flat straight road that is. Your new car will love the twisties enjoy your new car dont tell everyone how good they are the prices will just go up.

Welcome to the Blue Oval Brigade mate, nice example of an xr8. My folks actually own a garage up round the area it come from. The hay plains makes for a nice strip of road to stretch the legs a little.

Hay plains aren't nearly as boring as people might think... A good pod cast and two or three overtaking opportunities every hour saw that day absolutely fly by- seriously couldn't believe how the miles just disappeared.
I'll have to record the exhaust and put it up because this car has the best exhaust noise I've ever heard, bar none. It's epic- relatively quiet when cruising but give it the beans and it's actually kinda scary. I'll probably put an extra muffler/resonator in there as it's quite boomy at 1600-1800 rpm but everywhere else it's great. As for mods, had all these big ideas about alloy 347 stroker but TBH driving it today has actually scared me a bit. Might do CAI and leave it at that for a while. I've seen some reasonable looking setups but not sure what to do. Is there one like the Bluepower B series intake? ...manual BTW. Getting into 2nd on full throttle runs without a crunch is difficult... Last edited by madmelon; 03-12-2009 at 11:02 PM. |

nice work madmelon. Glad you took the trip over to SA to pick up a fine unit. On the open roads is where the fords excel in ecomony. I bet the trip was enjoyable. Now time to clean that baby up and take some killer pics.

Very nice.
That would be one of the very last AU XR8's aswell (AU's finished early september if i remember correctly) with low k's. I don't think you could have possibly found a better example.

Been very happy with it. 3 years I've been looking and until the last month limiting myself to NSW. I rekon I did ok at 14.8k with new radiator, new battery and 4 brand new Bridgestone Adrenalin tyres (~$1200 worth I think). Body is more or less immaculate, interior is like brand new. Definitely worth the trip.
Flat out for the next little while so probably won't get any pics. |
