Default Which AU XR?

Casper's recent poll prompted me to follow up on a thought that's been nagging me.
My ghia is the first Ford I've owned in 20 years and my level of interest in cars during that time was minimal so I'm not really up to speed on what's what.

It strikes me that AU XR's are a unique looking vehicle (yes, yes I know - I always was quick off the mark, lol) so I'm thinking of buying a good low kms, original XR and hanging on to it. Won't use it as daily driver, maybe use it for weekend cruises but mainly just have it as a nice example of the model.

I'd keep it in strictly original condition (not looking to alter it in anyway).

The big question is which AU XR?

Is there one which stands out (which would probably mean that it will be worth more than a lesser example in 20 or 30 years)?

If you have an opinion please comment with your reasons but let's not turn it into a brawl.
I'm only interested in XR's and would appreciate your feedback.

I think most would agree an a series 111 AUxr8, also late series 11 rate high along with the series 11 rebel where a limited build was made ( not sure of numbers )

all in all i see all levels of the AU XR holding firm / good and any model would be a good buy.

AU XR8 220 would be my pick, preferably one with every option ticked - manual, leather, sunroof, bodykit. Hang onto it and Id say they will be worth a pretty penny one day.

Cheers guys.

Looks like an optioned up series 3 XR8 will be the go.

I'm sure a T3 would be a "better" option for a whole bunch of reasons but I really like the look of XR's.

I was watching the V8's on tv last year, maybe Sandown, and from the overhead shot of the start the later models were shooting past (don't want to ruffle feathers but it was a bit hard to tell the difference between the brands on the cars whose livery I didn't know) and there was a mix of AU XR shapes a bit further back.

It didn't matter what the colours/stripes etc were, there was no mistaking them for anything other than AU XRs. Funnily enough I didn't take a lot of notice of them prior to buying my ghia... go figure.

Anyhoo, that was where the seed was planted and even though I need an extra car like I need a hole in the head I'm having difficulty moving on, lol.

Oh well, the kids are grown up and we have no debt.... I deserve one ;)

I know you stated XR only but if your looking for something that will have value in years to come in original condition consider a T series

XR - anything with the 220kw engine but the AUII Rebel would be at the top of the list. T3 is a better option though.

Yeah a T series will always be a good bet going forward. Rebel, SIII, all good. Dont underestimate the AU, its a great car. I think the BA's will suffer more in the long run.

If you want a nice xr, go an au3 xr8. If you want something that might increase in value, maybe an au1 t series, I believe only 104 TE50s and 54 TS50s were built in series one?

Cheers Nic

AU3 XR8, or AU2/3 XR6 VCT. If you want a low build no (ie rare) go the XR6 VCT ST - fully rebel kit, leather, ST stickers, 18s etc.

Nice car... a real credit to you.

I'm still talking myself into it but if I go ahead I'll be looking for a stock standard, very low km model (as much under 100k as I can find).

Thanks for the heads up and good luck with your sale. It will make someone very happy.

you'll be happy with a series 3, i know i am. there was actually an article in australian muscle car magazine stating that in a few years to come they think the series 3 XR's will be the next XE ESP and that their value will increase.

300 manuals and 1947 auto's.

Which XR to get is easy if you want to leave it untouched...

Top pick I would suggest would be the Rebel, then a fully optioned 220. If you're into the sixes, it's hard not to go past either an ST, or again a fully optioned XR6. 125 each of the Rebels/ST's were made.

I’d go for an AUII Rebel (but than again I’m a bit bias). From research I’ve done, there were only 125 Rebels made with only 40 being manual. So mines is 1 in 40!

I do agree with the others, definitely go the 220. I have had both 200 and now the 220, and the 220 is a better choice IMO.

I know of a Narooma Blue Series III AU XR8 with the Rebel Bodykit lovingly kept in a garage. The only mod being PBR brake upgrade as the standard brakes struggled to be up to it. Best of all it only has 34,500 k's on the clock - only driven every other weekend.

The handbuilt 220KW Windsor sounds and goes great and the chassis grips like you know what on a blanket. Guess that would be my pick.

Sorry mate but the only catch is it's not for sale
