Default SCREWED AU sump thread

Anyone had their sump thread stripped by a muscle-bound mechanic lately?

sump bolts (like oil filters) always seem to be overtightened...

im guessing you didnt realise the thread was stipped until next service when u went to do it yourself ? and as such getting the mech to fix the thread may be a bit far fetched by now.

you can either tap out a new thread (means bigger sump plug though) or buy a wrecker jobbie... or aftermarket sump if youre that way inclined.

the only times i have heard of sump threads on AUs being stripped is by rattle-gun weilding mechanics.
In our cabs we would change their oil every 28 days for years which meant the sump bolt came out a lot of times - and we never wrecked a thread.

What I have been told, and its put me in good stead, is that because the sumps are aluminum they locktite/vacuum.

The best trick to undo them is to tighten first then loosen breaks the vacuum/lock.

This trick has never failed for me along with using a 15" impact socket to get max support around the socket head and a knuckle bar.

No more stripped threads /crossfingers hope this helps.

Not and an AU but i fixed a EL or EF sump plug because clueless Indian students stuffed it so bad the sump had to be dropped which meant the sub frame had to be dropped.

I had it happen with mine. They are an alloy sump and use a helicoil. When I removed the plug, the helicoil came with it.

Had a bloke come out and fix it up. Drilled, tapped and installed a stronger threadsert. Bought with him a new genuine plug and fitted it too, uses same size still.

Cost about $100 all up. Even helped me do the oil change, build pressure and check it out once running.

slow 247 is spot on thats the best way to go any good mechanic should be able to fix it up for you
