Tailgaiting

So I'm sure everybody is sick of it. It happens to me so often these days that even people I know are doing it.

Perfect example. Last night on the way home a guy I work with and actually call "mate" was sat about 3 feet from my back bumper the entire way home. I drive down express ways so this is a 90kph zone then a 110kph zone. If I had to emergency brake for some reason we probably would've both been dead.

How do I approach this guy about it. And what do you guys do when randoms tailgait you?

Yeh, Tailgating is getting ridiculous. I saw a guy in a big 4X4 sitting right up the back of an L platter yesterday and the Learner was keeping up with traffic so WTF?

you're assuming OP is not sitting in left hand lane which may not be correct.

i usually say "f off" into the rear vision mirror and people always back off.

Note: I always do the posted speed limit if weather conditions are clear (give or take 1 to 2 KPH) and if I'm using the right lane I move to the left if traffic is approaching behind me.

If people tailgate me I just drop 5kph and then they normally back off or overtake me.

Left lane. And I believe it's illegal to exceed the speed limit. It sounds pretty arrogant that you're defending a illegal and dangerous act because I refuse to cop a $300+ fine so some inconsiderate douche bag wants to sit up my ***.

I was in the left lane, there was a car in the right so wouldn't have been enough room to get around....I don't see how tailgaiting can be justified in anyway shape or form.

Tail gating is against the road rules and so is speeding....
If people are too ignorant to drive in a safe and considerate manner on the road then they are the ones with the issue.

As an example, I am constantly tail gated while doing 110kmh in a 100kmh zone.
By your example i am "slowing" traffic down and being a pain to some airhead who wants to go ever faster?

Brake check or slowing down works wonders most of the time...

My issue with brake checking is that I don't wanna mess my back end up.

Just press the brake pedal enough to trigger your brake lights, stick your arm out the window & motion for them to go past - let them become someonelse's problem. If they don't want to go past - then slow down (10-20kph below the posted limit) until they eventually get (usually quickly) exasperated & roar past.
DON'T do anything aggressive etc - you don't know if they're on drugs, carrying weapons etc. Let karma catch up to them.

Yep - have to agree with most of that. You don't always know what "condition" some of these morons are in. I usually move over if they're in that much of a hurry.......you usually see these ******* go and keep tailgating other drivers after they've passed by. In fact - this happened to me this very morning.....a woman in her early 20's....stuck on my bumper in a 50 zone.....1 lane. I pulled over to the side.......let her pass and just watched her barrel down the road on to her next victim........&^*Kwit

As for the original OP, if i have a tailgater (rare) and i'm already speeding and i can't get out of the way they have to deal with it!
I don't speed through traffic lights. most of the time i'm only a couple over

Agree. If you're constantly getting tailgated then you're slow in more ways than one.

Were you traveling in the left or right lane? If left keep driving as normal and tell your idiot workmate to just go around you. If right just move over. Simple huh?

They need adverts on the tv telling people that anything over 80km/h you need to keep in the left lane unless overtaking. So many stupid drivers who don't move over on the southern expressway. It's very frustrating. They are scared that they won't make their turn off. Grrrrr

when we do that we are on a 2-lane road/Freeway going the speed limit or 10k over, so absolutely no reason to tail gate anyone. if im on the right lane i give the person a few seconds to move, if not i do it myself. i won't tail gate someone for a km if they don't move.

Personally I don't let it bother me.

If someone wants to sit up my bumper, go for it, won't make the world go any faster.

In saying that if I'm in the right lane I move over straight away when I see someone coming up behind me.

If it happens to be single lane, I just go about my business, I don't do any of this brake check crap, or 10km under the limit, then 20 under, that's just retarded.

I know of someone who was getting tailgated badly, so they slowed down, still tailgating so he kept slowing until he came to a complete stop in a 60 zone.


If you sit 5 metres behind me, I will normally slow to a speed where driving 5 metres behind me is safe. Obviously this only applies if I am in the left lane or I am on a single lane road doing the speed limit (or a bit more)

One time I was in the right lane doing 110 in an 80 zone. Had some guy come flying up behind me flashing his light and pointing for me to change lanes to let him past. I was turning right in less then 1 km so I stayed in the right lane and watched this guy get frustrated and pass me on the left.

Many people don't care if you have a L plate on your car. On my L's I was doing 60 in a 60 zone. Slowed down to 50 for a few bends and I had some ****** in an AU wagon blast me with there horn and sped past me as soon as a second lane opened up.

Also when on my L's the left lane was ending, I was in right lane. At the last second some bogan 'women' in a POS looking Excel come flying up in the left lane and slow down next directly next to me. Being a good L plater I slowed down and let her in, then she starts abusing me I just flipped her off and kept driving. Then at the next set of lights she stopped next to us and told my mum she was calling the police on us because we had Kids in the car with an L plater... WTF so she just makes up her own laws now?
Ah well I got in front of her for the next single lane section and drove well below the speed limit for the first time.
I think people just think an L plater is an easy target.

My cousin does this and it makes me nervous. more than one occasion he has locked up the brakes cos he was too close, and had a couple of very near misses with me in the car... to top it off, he drive a wx or wz holden ute thats about 25 years old with drum brakes!

I had some knob jockey on my clacker doing 100 in a 100 on a single lane thoroughfare in the wifes FG,
on a downhill section changed from economy to performance mode, in the transition of the trans tightening up, said *** bandit nearly rear ends me (that is how close he was)
got all upset & thought he would pass me & once in front slow down so he could brake check me, fortunately I just kept slowing, keeping safe stopping distance, & tockley licker boy gave up & , moved on

Ask him if HE likes being tailgated in a polite off the cuff sort of way, if he says no, and I am backing it in he will, then ask him what his concerns are about it, listen politely to his answers, then ask him why he doesn't it to others?

Be friendly, but it will drive home the point. Personalise it.

The problem I find when leaving a fair distance between myself and the car infront of me is some drivers feel its an invitation jump in the space.

if you r in the left lane and your not speeding then just concentrate on what your doing they will either pas you or turn off, or realise how close they are and drop away a little. But if your in the right lane and your not passing anyone just move over and let them go, its safer for them to be no where near you so the quicker they get past the safer you are.

'brake checking' is dangerous and is just going to insight road rage. It annoys the hell out of me, after driving a lifted 4x4 for 2.5yrs I realised that because it sits so high it abviously apears in someones rear view mirror that I am traveling alot closer than i actually am (normally 2 car lenghts) and the amount of 'brake checks' i got was rediculous, resulting in me standing on the brake and everyone behind would have to stand on it, just dangerous for no reason.

I think people get a little precious about whats going on behind them some times.

I've noticed that while having my tow ball back on (moving furniture) that I get tailgated less.

But once the trailer is hooked up I get tailgated more than with and without a tow ball.

Interesting. I always give trailers more distance in case something falls off/flies out of it.
