Default Do you think that Ford Dealers are moving used cars right now?

So do you think that Ford Dealers, or any other dealers are mving used cars at the moment?

Just been to a local dealer, and as per usual they offer low trade in value on my car, and don't budge on the sticker price. Their car has been on the lot since October.

I wouldn't have thought that they are moving much stock, but the way that they price things seems to tell a different story......

What are your thoughts?

I was very surprised last Oct when I bought my G6E that the dealer would not budge on price (no trade/no finance).
The dealership had bought the car new off Ford (however that works) and the service manager had used it for 4500kms.
Salesguy told me that if I looked around (I had) I'd know that it was already a very good price (it was).
Still, felt a bit miffed I didn't get something off...

In my case I made a phone offer that was $1500 less than advertised price.

He checked (don't they all) and told me that there was no movement in it for them.

"How about $1000?" said I, in the full knowledge they'll never let you walk...

Nope, was quite prepared to lose the sale. I hung up.

Got my s-i-l and daughter to check it out that afternoon. Yep, new car.

Rang back, "how about $500 off?"

He says "mate. we know it's a good price; you obviously know it's a good price, can we get together or not?"

Transferred $500 holding dep and drove up and finalised it the next day.

Sometimes they won't budge. (Maybe I should have asked for a set of steak knives...)

Personally I'd walk out if they won't budge, unless I was desperate for another car, regardless of whether it was a good price or not.

If it's a fair price take it. Often they advertise with nothing to spare in the margins - otherwise no one would look at it with the hundreds of similar cars on the internet to search.

Oh the deal?

$37500 drive away for a 50th Ann G6E (4500kms).

Nearest price on carsale? Nothing under $40K at the time.

Hey, back in late February early March last year when we picked up our G6E, they had a new GT...the supercharged one...sitting on the showroom floor as a display. Nice gold colour, black stripes, little display sign beside it with specs.

That same car was still there a few weeks back when we took our car in for it's service...

They would have talked deals when I bought mine as well. The problem was that their G6E's started at $42K so we would have been talking for a while, lol.

Same with Denmac.

I wanted a 50th Ann so knew what was about. At the time there were only 12 of them on carsales. That tends to limit the options somewhat.

If they wouldn't take any cash off the price, I would have asked that they accessorise the car with some stuff for free - headlight/bonnet protectors, tow pack, mud flaps, sat nav, etc, etc.

Sure, if it had have been the same price as the others I came across I would have asked for all sorts of stuff.

It's a bit hard to bargain when its $4000+ cheaper than elsewhere. They knew it and I knew it.

It's the first time I've ever bought a car and couldn't haggle (other than auctions) and that was a bit of a surprise seeing as we all reckon that in these tough times they are desperate to sell.

I figure that at the price it was, the haggling was already done ;)

Spot on.

Put it this way, if you're advertising cars on the internet you need to be extremely competitive otherwise there's no point, you won't get the enquiry.

A massive proportion of used vehicle sales are all off the internet these days.

I'm confused?

Ford have an awesome line up of Falcons.. Turbo and non turbo. Excellent features great interiors and fuel economy and now a super charged beast that is way ahead of anything HSV have.

Why aren't they flooding the TV and newspapers with ads??

Congratulations...that's the most asked question on this forum (I've asked it myself more than once...).

Some Ford dealers are much better than others...hell, you don't even have to add "Ford" to the front there. My wife went to two Holden dealers, one up here, and one in our old home town, when we were trying to make up our mind between an XR6 and an SV6 (ended up with a G6E) and one dealer actually said to her repeatedly that he wouldn't give her a test drive..."wouldn't you rather get your husband to drive the car?", or possibly he would take her for a drive in it himself...honestly. After looking around to be sure she hadn't stepped through a time warp to 1955, she left. The other dealer in Rocky was positively eager to throw the keys for anything at her to try, from a Calais to an SV6 to an SS ute.

Some dealers just have thier stuff together when it comes to selling cars, and some don't.

I had to haggle for my car for almost 2 months to get it down to a price I was willing to pay. Saved $1700 plus free mudflaps. I was glad no one else bought it in the meantime.

He was happy to give me some extras rather than lowering the price. But I didn't want extras. I did take the mudflaps though.

Sorry I just realised you're talking about used cars. Mine was brand new.

Sometimes for a load of reasons they can't and won't haggle. If this is the case, and it's a pretty good deal on the car, ask to talk about extras, extended warranty, third party stuff etc. They usually have lots of room to move with this stuff.

Although I don't pretend to know how the car trade works, when I was working at an Apple reseller - we would get people coming in trying to make a deal with us on computers. The sad fact is, and as I had to explain to all of them, we make almost nothing on the computers. For example, we would get a mid range laptop about 8% cheaper than retail, yes 8% cheaper. Add in freight (customers who deal directly with Apple get free shipping, resellers do not) - we would be lucky to make about $50 on the laptop. So we had to push the third party stuff - that's whee we made the money.

In the end we wouldn't even deal with the education market - we couldn't compete after freight and the discount they get from Apple. Added onto this, Apple would fulfil their orders first, and resellers got what was left over. We had clients order from the Apple online store, and receive the computer within 24-48 hours. We would order the same computer and get a 'no stock - 2-3 week wait'...

I'm sure Ford can be like that. I'm not saying the dealers are not out to look after themselves, but sometimes they're put in a hard place... Plus if it's a good deal, someone will buy it sooner or later.

Well, they didn't want to do a deal. They said that they would rather wholesale the car off to get rid of it. And what I was proposing was not ridiculous at all, in fact it was fair. They just wanted their cake and eat it too, nothing on my car, and pretty much sticker price on theirs.

Why don't people want to do business?

Oh well

The last couple of new cars that i have purchased (honda Accord, Nissan Maxima) have had manufacturer driveaway pricing, which dealer would not budge on.

i really didn't need/want any extras so my negotiating tactic was servicing. The dealers that got the business were the ones that offered the most free servicing. relatively low cost for the dealer, but from my perspective gave me real dollars in the pocket, just not upfront.

Hang on, you wanted top dollar for an aged (I'm sure it in top nick but its at least 4 years old, correct?) B series V8, that no one in a yard can sell at the moment. And then, to top it off, you wanted to skin them on other car they had on the lot; that they probably got shafted on last month by another person..... And you felt they were being unreasonable....

I didn't want top dollar, only what was reasonable. And I didn't want to skin them either. Their car has been sitting there on the lot since October, and now I understand why.

And to show that I am not being completley unreasonable, I just signed up for exactly the same car, same kays, colour wasn't my preference however, with another dealer for less. They took some price off the sticker and gave me a very good trade.

Some people simply do not want to do business.....

Yeah when I got mine the dealer would budge a cent. I knew it was a good deal and I wanted the car badly so I told him ill take it. No point fussing over 500-1000k if its the car you want badly.. He threw in 6months rego and green slip when I signed lol.

39k advertised - $6500 trade in for my wifes 2003 Focus so a payout of $32,500 for a XR6T with luxury pack, manual and 3000kms on the clock. I was happy.

the same happened to me here in townsville.

wanted to trade my 2006 MPS6 for an SS commodore (2007 6spd auto no AFM, an early model just what i wanted) and that commodore had been there for 96 days (sales guy admitted himself).

they offered me 12k on my mps6 without even looking at the car (redbook is 20k) and no discount on the SS.

so i told him to go get nutted.

they think if they leave the car there long enough, it will come back into fashion LOL
