Hey, before i go getting done for theft id like to ask a question.
There are some body shops in the area and they always have a big pile of bumpers next to or in a skip behind their shops. Are these free to take? Or do they still own it? I ask because driving past one yesterday i saw a newish audi front bar with the grill and badge on it still and thought it would look cool in the shed!

It is not your property to remove.
If you ask the body shop, I am sure they will let you take what you like. .

I'd say if it was in the skip, then it's up for grabs. Any legal professionals in the house who know what the law is? Asking them would be the best way to go about it though.

In theory it would still be theft as it is not yours, and you have no legal right to it, may be approach the owner and ask if you can take stuff out of the bin.

Go in and ask them for it.
Sneaking around after hours, on private property, and taking it, I would class as theft. |

Before making decisions always consider the media test.
Would you be happy to be filmed and shown on a 'Current Affair' or '60 minutes' with all your friends, family and employer watching the show. If it feels wrong it probably is. If any of the above apply then probably don't do it!!

most panel shops use bumper recyclers too.
the recyclers come around every couple of months and pick them all up. they refurbish what they can and resell them back to panel shops etc etc usually, these bumper recyclers will sell the refurbished items back to the shops they pick up from, at a discounted price.

Even if it is sitting in the middle of the road. It is still theft. You can ask to take it. But if you do not ask you are stealing.
It is the same with hard rubbish. You can be charged with theft if you pick up an item from the side of the road, that is being thrown out. |

I am pretty sure I saw an article on the people who take rubbish from nature strips when councils have those hard rubbish days, and the cop quoted in the article said that technically people are stealing. Police are going to use their discretion when deciding to charge someone, taking stuff from kerbs they wont (even tho you dont own it), but taking from a goodwill bin they will. Taking something that is next to a skip is a bit dodgy as you dont know if the company is sending it off for recycling (and getting cash for the metals). |
