AutoGuide.com has a great road test comparo with the Mazda3 equivalent.

Sitting at the crossroads of hot hatches, between the Mazdaspeed3 and
Volkswagen GTI it’s not as raw as the former nor as refined as the latter,
but an impressive mix of the two. Using technology to deliver everything
from power, to handling, to refinement, this model lives up to its ST badge

The ST Focus has been on sale in Australia for about 6 months now.

Well there you go ....serves me right for ALWAYS zapping the adds, assuming they do advertise it.
But the write-up is worth the read still, the stuff we get is shallow and superficial in comparison

They went on sale last year - August 1st was the "on sale" date, however deliveries didn't start until after that.

I've had mine for 6 months, they are a brilliant little car for the money - such a great all rounder.

I've read that 2012 plates can be picked up for 40k and under.

Retail on a brand new one is around 43k from memory. (Drive away prices)

Wow! You could get a loaded Mustang GT for that here. Focus ST is around $25K.
