Mine was black. Not sure of the Mk1 RS2000 or the '76 german imports, but the 79 and 80 RS's I had all had black rocker covers. Blue was common on the TC/D 2L cortinas, and used in many a 2L escort conversion.

Thanks for your replies. It's a 1979 4 door RS. Cover is currently blue, so maybe Cortina engine has been fitted.

My 77 2dr GL 2L 4speed was originally completely blue motor from new. I thought all Cortinas & Escorts were blue except the RS having black motors. I could be wrong though.

Aussie RS2000s had Blue cam covers and air cleaners, NOT black.
The engine block should be black. In every other way, the RS2000 engine is the same as the 2.0 Ghia and GL. Even carby jetting. The cortina a had blue blocks and blue (plastic) air cleaners, which you sometimes see on early 2.0lt Escorts like rally packs. |

And so did my rs2000 midnight blue two door with black engine and cam cover from factory and I have to say it.... The carby jets were a differant size compared to a stock cortina engine I bought to rebuild to suit a turbo. That was a long time ago but I still have a few marbles left.

I recall that my silver RS (1979) did have a black cam cover but that had been recoed before I bought it. The other 3 were matching number 1980 models, all with blue cam covers from factory.

The Carby jets on the single downdraft weber, varied between auto, manual and year model, as did the distributor advance curve, by now you would be flat out finding one with original jets.

As a matter of interest the RS 2000 head had slightly higher compression and these heads wore a black cam cover.

I am an old Escort & RS2000 owner so I am going from memory here as well. My recollection also is black covers equals high compression engine and blue cover was low compression. I think all auto's had the low compression engine - 64kw as opposed to 70kw. Just going from memory - don't shoot me

Thanks, Peter. |
