Exclamation Queensland Police vehicle fleet to be updated with Hyundai Sonatas

"QPS Media on Sep 13, 2016 @ 2:57pm
Police Minister Bill Byrne and Road Policing Command Assistant Commissioner Mike Keating at today’s launch.
The Queensland Police Service has over 2,500 vehicles including marked, unmarked, covert and purpose-built tactical response vehicles.

With the addition of the two new vehicles a total of 21 Hyundai Sonatas are now in the fleet.

Police Minister Bill Byrne said the QPS had been trialling a range of different vehicle makes and models to ensure the Service’s fleet continues to support its operational needs.

“The Fleet Management Group has also been considering significant financial, commercial and environmental factors,” Minister Byrne said.

“As a result, the QPS has now approved the Hyundai Sonata four cylinder vehicle as a replacement for the current fleet of six cylinder vehicles.

“This approach will help to reduce the carbon footprint of the Queensland Police Service as the new vehicles are more fuel-efficient and have lower greenhouse gas emissions.

“The roll out will begin this financial year and is estimated to save the QPS around $2.3 million as 234 vehicles are replaced with Sonatas,” Minister Bryne said.

Road Policing Command Assistant Commissioner Mike Keating said the QPS would still utilise some higher-powered vehicles as required.

“The PSBA Fleet Assets Service Group in collaboration with the QPS has identified the Hyundai Sonata turbo model as a potential replacement for our existing higher performance vehicles,” Assistant Commissioner Keating said.

“A number of these vehicles outfitted to QPS specifications will be received shortly – and they will then undergo an evaluation to determine their suitability.

“The Queensland Police Service will continue to ensure police vehicles are fit for purpose and support the needs of operational policing into the future.”

Yeah I've been seeing them for a few months now in full Police colours. I've also seen unmarked i40's and Tucson's.

Money must be running short to use Hyundais, they could have at least got the Hyundai Exodus Sedan. Crims will be laughing off into the distance if they see a sonata, Tucson or iLoad behind with flashing party lights.

It will be the modern day version of 'The Bill', with big men trying to climb out of little cars.

Police haven't been "Big Men" for years.
They are now just whoever ticks the diversity box.

Sonata's will be fine for GD police. NSW police have been using slow cars for years.
They all seam to be Camry's, Hilux's, Rangers, Pajero's and iLoads. With the odd 6 cylinder base model Commodore or Falcon.

Local HQ here has a Volvo Polestar S60, would feel strange being pulled over by a light blue car.

I am driving a Hyundai i30 now temporarily thanks to my brother.

Personally, I think the police should be provided better vehicles than this Hyundai crap, especially if they have to on occasion traverse distance and traffic quickly to attend accidents, crime scenes, etc.

They should be provided with proper engineered machinery for their and the public safety, accounting for what they need to do in extreme circumstances.

Are you saying the Falcons and Commodores are better built than the Hyundai?

Doing some work on someones car atm.
A longtime regular customer.

Used to drive ea/b/d falcons then ef/L and lastly a short stint in an Au.
Then finally decided to "upgrade" to a brand new i20 about 18months ago.
And about 80% of the suspension is absolutely f#cked on it. The dash sqeaks and rattles and the door/window seals are just about useless on it.
Their old falcons ran well for years with minimal upkeep.

This isn't your everyday comute. They're a country resident. So dirt roads and corrugations etc. So yes a hard life. But not worse than the falcons had. If anything this car has gad a better life. It gets washed.
And it lives in the shed. The old falcons just got left out the front or back in full weather.

Im gonna hate to see how this poor car looks in 3-4years. (If its still on the road at all)

perhaps not the best sort of car for corrugated roads but if its 18 months old why isn't it back at the dealer getting a warranty repair?

Saved myself from a head on with an idiot twat in a VT commodore by swerving into a kerb at 60kph. The EL's tyre exploded on impact. Jacked the car up, changed to a spare wheel and drove off. Car still steered and drove straight. Try that in a Hyundai

Problem with that is not i20 which is small, economy , light car but the fact that was bought for a wrong purpose. Instead of cheap , used Falcons people decide to buy new in the same price range. It is like saying old boots are better than new thongs.

The Falcons, especially the XR6 Turbos and FGX XR8s, are better engineered for performance- ie power, acceleration, braking, high speed stability and ability to turn with composure.

And high speed running with cornering ability/.....

The Hyundai's are well built but I doubt they will last too long the way the cops treat their cars !!

The Holden Precision Driving Team had a few years when they were the Hyundai Precision Driving Team. Those cars get punished. The Hyundais stood up it a lot better than the regulars.

Bear in mind that the mechanical components that failed regularly in the Holdens (gearboxes and diffs) are basically the same as what's in an equivilent Ford.

G'day all , Sorry to use this older thread but I had an interesting talk to one of our new local coppers yesterday about what Tasmania Police are looking at ..
He is an ex NSW P/F Highway Patrol chap too. General duties here... He was in the Launceston police garage last week and noticed a couple of Subaru's with the war stickers being added..He said "The boss wants to look at them" .. He reckons the majority will be some sort of Toyota though but Hyundai he said is in the frame too..
With the Four Wheel Drive stuff they'll stay the same he thinks , except the Territory goes of course.. Cheers Rod..

At the end of the day, it does not matter what the coppers drive these days as they have number plate recognition crap fitted so they will catch up with you sooner or later.
Cop chases are pretty pathetic in Australia anyway so again doesnt matter plus there is a good chance theres a chopper available to follow the car anyway.

Buzz boxes these days put out more than enough power to wind their way through the traffic jams but they will be like the UK, boring comical police cars.

Bring in the Dodge Chargers from the states. Now that is what im talking about yeehaa!
