Default Dangerous carjacks

Any AU owner knows how bad a factory car jack can be, can't speak for B series & beyond. My E series scissor jack was a bloody beauty. Worked everywhere it was asked to, never a problem. The AU jack might work on a go kart with no engine. Mine has bent rivets from one use. So I go to SuperCheapAuto, dont want to spend a lot as I have floor jacks at home. I saw a scissor jack like my old E series so I bought that & a 4 way brace. I bent the brace undoing the 3rd wheel nut on the first wheel. I torque my wheel nuts so they are not over tight. The jack is also designed by a person who has never operated one. The handle to turn the jack is 6 inches long. That allows the user half a turn only before you do not have the physical strength to turn it. I am taking it back thursday night for a refund & I will get a Kincrome mini floor jack for the boot & I will put one of my breaker bars and a socket in for a brace. Why bother making anything if it is not up to task? Im sure the staff won't have a clue. As long as I get a refund I suppose....

Oh boy !!! The way of the world at the moment. Buy stuff that is useless, talk to non-English speaking call centres, talk to staff who have no training or idea, Buy a fridge that has cameras installed so that you can see what is inside your fridge by looking at you smart phone .... f### me, the sooner China blows us all up the better.
I too have just had a very frustrating day trying to talk to idiots, and waiting for tradesmen to turn up at the appointed time, waiting on emails that were"sent" this morning ..........blah blah.
Time for an alcoholic stress relief sedation glass.

What time was that? Between 9:00am to 1:00pm, or between 1:00pm to 5:00pm?

Pretty much, ****** me off to no end. Buying car parts that work or last is near impossible. Buy genuine only or buy second hand, is better than anything after market or reproduction.

Whatever happened to Australian standards? I remember if a product like a jack hit the market and it was sub par it would be just about front page news...now we get this crap day in day out. I bought a chandalier, actually my girlfriend chose it. Some furniture importer place . Has to be assembled by me sir, veeeery diffcuilt and special to put together. So yeah mate sure, let me know when to pick it up. The day comes and I pick this bloody great fully assembled monstrosity up and walk out like I'm recreating Liberaces lounge room decor and get it home. This thing had THE most scary wiring I have ever seen,it it was rated for our standards I'll eat my hat, plus the way he assembled it and joined the wires was laughable, twisted together wire joiners not fitted to some and just insulation tape wrapped around them. So here I am,girlfriend dropping the lip saying I love it,old mate denies any issues, put together by proper electwician sir,if pwoblem you get report from qualified person. What reeeealy p...ssed me was she says,oh darling I'm sure it is OK,they wouldn't sell it if wasn't.....bloody hell, but then I realised that's probably the standard attitude of the general head up bum public these days . So I end up spending the day rewiring the rotten thing to make it remotely safe. Where the hell have our standards gone with this stuff?? So we get all this crap and people take it ,but then sue for trivial stuff like coffee shops making their coffee too hot and burning them...jeez,take some ownership and get it into perspective I say, sorry,Rant over sorry guys

It was closer to go to the shops than the wreckers. I will def go & look for a trusty E series scissor job. They were a dependable jack in most conditions. It's not really much to ask is it, you know, pay for a product that is designed to do a task, except they didn't check to see if it works properly, that would have cost too much.

Aust standards ?? Pffft !! They have SOLD off any testing in electrical field so I assume the same goes with other stds..
Another jack from wreckers ? Or light hydraulic bottle jack.. ??
Make sure scissor jacks are used on level ground..

Stock Au jacks will fail soon enough if you jack your car too high a few times & the welded tab you wind snaps off too after some use. I ended up getting a sturdier Toyota scissor jack for the boot & new bottle jack as backup. So far so good!

cheer's, Maka

Australian standards? Nah they have either been replaced by euro standards or ignored. Only comes into effect when the highway patrol w anchor wants to defect you.

I carry an AU jack as a spare in my Subaru as that's what I had laying around. Has jacked up a few bush cars aswell.. Might be nearing the end of its life. Good to know cheers people!

This is why basically all my carjacks (and most of my tools in general) are much older than I am. I usually use this old orange bottlejack I found in a junkshop that was attached to a dump, it cost me about $5 and is capable of lifting just about anything.

They just don't make 'em like they used to!

Likewise. Can't see how that ties in with changing flat tyres. Maybe the SKK or a SKS is a new import & you get a case of ammo with each new car bought, like the free guns with any new bank accounts opened in the USA.

Lets leave it that chinese made SKS and SKK rifles will burn through a crate of ammo quite happily with only the occasional misfeed

The gun story has no relevance to the op. If your going to highlight a portion of a larger statement, best to keep it relevant to the original intention, especially if your looking for a laugh.

Excellent thread. everyone's thinking it! It takes too damn long to sift through all the crappy things to get something that actually works properly.
Even when you want to spend money on a good tool, trying to find it is near impossible. Usually all you find are the same poorly build tools but they put a coat of paint on them and charge you 5 times more.

Finding and sourcing good quality tools is a skill in of itself these days.

My issue is with crap tools. I don't look for the cheapest & then whinge when it breaks, I look for the best quality available. I have not mentioned country of origin nor have I put down specific brands. My point again, do not sell poor quality tools when there is a high element of danger involved with their operation. My intolerance of woeful service in many retail outlets is always directed at the management or owners, not the poor schmuck getting $20 p/h. After all, the buck stops with them, if they can be found.
