I have too many cars and rego is getting expensive now so i'm considering letting the rego lapse on my BA GT.
my daily is an FG XT and the wife has her Adventra LX8 so the GT does not get driven, last time i drove it was to summernats and before that was xmas day, before that was to the track early last year I did about 1800km in the year and in that time it had 2 insurance claims to repair it, hail and someone backed into it when i was getting a quote for the hail. rego is about $1000 but its $1000 i can spend on things i need more the BA GT is the 1of1 narooma blue so i'll be keeping it forever and handing it down to my daughter when i'm too old to drive it. it will still be insured and I can drive it to summernats next year on a 28day permit and the same if i take it to the track plus i have a car trailer so i can trailer it anywhere so am i stupid for considering this? p.s. I have 2 bikes, 1 boat, 2 trailers, 3 cars all registed and insured all up about $5k a year for rego and insurance for all of them

If the rego lapses, so does your current insurance policy.

laid up cover will cover it for everything but not under its own power without a permit plus the premium goes from $700 to $250, so its still fully insured for $500 less per year

As long as you have that option, most people don't realise that standard policies are conditional on having current rego.

Mind if I ask who you are insured with? I have one project car on laid up but my policy with Shannons specifically says not insured for road use. If I can get a laid up policy which covers me for road use if I have a permit or even club rego then I would go that route. Currently paying $700/yr full comp on one car that has done 500km in 6yrs. TIA.

Down here, I've put 3 months rego on, let it sit for 6-12, then when they get stroppy and start demanding the plates to be turned in, I chuck another 3 months rego on.
Seems to get a bit more complicated if you're changing ownership of an unregoed vehicle though. |

I don't think its silly at all... If its not being used worth a damn then $1000 on rego, the insurance is a bit of a waste....
Unless you want to start using it daily and ditch the XT then let it lapse and use your car trailer to take the GT to Track Day's/etc...

normally i would just pay it but we just adopted a little girl so all my toys are getting used less and less, she it too young to go for a white knuckle ride up the mountain in it yet or appreciate a manual V8....hopefully when she is on her L's in 13 years she wants to drive a manual if manuals still exist by then

shannons, i called them and laid up is anything not under own power, if i get a permit i must call shannons and change back to extreme limited use just for those few days
also i am paying $700pa for extreme limited use and it will go down to $400 for laid up

I have to say, it is a Luxury to have extra vehicles, boats, bikes, carvans etc
The only way around it for you is some sort of car club rego price, but I think it needs to be classified as Historic or Classic or pay for permits as its used -not sure if NSW offer this https://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/regi...le-permit-fees

the latest form from rms just needs a "Vehicle Suitable for Safe Use Declaration"

I don't think it is a wise move.
As you are in NSW, check out with the RMS what you will have to do to get it re-rego'd in the future. Advice from members that are in states that are not NSW are not relevant. The hassle I had to go through to get an old car that had been previously registered in my name at my address, and the hassle to get a private sale Qld car registered in NSW was worth more in my time and effort than the cost of the rego and CTP. Complete PITA. |

Have the same dilemma and have 3 cars insured with shannons on 1 policy, XC on club rego minimal use comp ins, Jag on 3rd party property damage and AU2 XR8 comprehensive but again minimal use. Just under $1000 a year probably drive these cars once a month or less but I still love to drive them. It all comes down to if you can afford to have them, cause once they are not registered and not driven they can still deteriorate quickly and particularly if not adequately garaged away from the elements.

I think there have been some changes made to the safety certificate process 'cause it seems pretty difficult now to get an old car passed. The last time I had it done, the fellow said that the bubbling tint on the rear windscreen rendered the car unroadworthy.
So just a heads up I guess... the car will probably be held to a higher standard down the track when you go to re-register it, and your daughter may need to spend quite a bit of money to fix stuff that's not really an issue. |

If I buy one coffee ad day M-F at $4. That adds up to $960 per year. If you go to 7-11 and make your own, you will keep $720 in your pocket. Anyone who buys their lunch 5 days a week is spending a minimum of $2400 based on $10 a day. We all look to things like broadband & phone contracts, or loan repayments to save a few hundred here and there, but the big expenses are the little ones. EbV8, there is no reason at all to let that rego lapse if you have a look at daily expenses. Also, always worth talking to underwriters when exploring insurance options.

this is the UVP which needs the safe use declaration attached with it, no mention of a blue slip at all, I used 1 on a boat trailer last year, my dad used 1 of a 2003 focus from ACT to NSW and the other was a lwb Merc van from 30 mins away, no blueslips or anything require for those trips (all in past 12 months)

I had a conversation with a mate about this over the weekend. He picked up a cheap T series and is going to hand in the rego, his reasoning is the moneys better off spent on the car, fair enough.
I prefer to keep the rego paid even if it means doing a weekend of OT at work to offset the cost from everyday life. As mentioned before older cars can be held to higher account but the thing that gets me with the WA system is the inconsistency in inspection standards, what might pass one day won't the next, I've pitted a car, failed then re-submitted a couple of days later without a spanner turned and passed. The biggest one for me though is test driving. I was able to tune, de-bug, nut and bolt the Escort at my leisure, I paid the rego for the five years it was off the road and a big selling point on my MK1 GT was that it was registered, I'll keep paying that too and be driving as soon as its done.

Conditional permits will be fine but in the long run keep the car in such a condition that a blue slip inspection wont be a problem. Cars are a bit more involved then trailers and i got a blue slip on a trailer a few years ago. Its not just doesnt leak any fluids, brakes work and off you go like a pink slip. The place i got the bluey from for my trailer is run by koreans. Korean cars aside, these guys run on an honour based system. Theyre actually a really honest mob who run a good shop. On the initial consult (i dont speak korean, only bogan english) i could sence they thought everyone says shes all good. They booked me in and it was a 2 minute turn around with a handshake. No bs from me, the reason for the 8 year expired rego was the previous owner had a jag. That model had no tow bar option and even if it did it would be rated too low. So the moral of my rant is keep maintaining it to the top standard, and if you want to get it back on the streets its not a painful exercise involving a to do list to do so. And yes, i live in nsw.
