I don't know how many are on board but my wife's Escape is on board HÖEGH DETROIT due into Freemantle on 7/11, Melb 14/11, Pt Kembla 17/11 and Brisbane 21/11

Oh, and I cancelled the order so if anyone wants a Lucid Red, Escape Vignale AWD with 20's try the Ford dealer in Dandenong.

A sort of inter-related question, who controls the product planning of the Thai Ford factories and those in our region? I'd guess building Rangers and sending more of the available supplier pool components like semi-conductors etc..to help keep production up is a priority in this region or Ford Aus would be stuffed even more.

I'd imagine China is under it's own independent control and based on MG sales it seems they are less constrained on parts issues.

Ford EU self-interest has to worry about supplying the EU markets first over Australia as we obviously could have received more Escapes during the year if that decision was forced through by cutting some euro market builds and building Oz spec models.

Anyway, now that we've decided to keep our 2016 Terry (45K km) and see where the EV market heads, I'm going to research some upgrades for the Terry...there's a neighbour that I want to remove some smug smile factor from ...either that or smoke him literally with our non-DPF 2.7V6 lion.

The last thing they'd want is for Toyota to usurp their position at the top of the ute tree. When's the last time Toyota dropped from no.1 in a market segment?

They didn’t lose sales crown but perhaps it was when Toyota thought Hilux
not having a five star crash rating didn’t matter?
That was the defining moment that gave Ford and the Ranger real oxygen.

Seriously though, Toyota is also facing supply and delivery timing issues,
that more than anything is making and hurting monthly sales.
I am pleased that Ranger is still selling strongly but we know that Ute sales
is not a zero sum game, Ranger and Hilux prosper in spite of each other

I remember reading on here that the Ranger is one of, if not THE most profitable model Ford makes. Ford have already stated they have prioritized their most profitable models in regards to rationing the chips.

Most entertaining part of that article is the suggestion thar Ranger may be the first Ford product in 26 years to top the Aussie sales market.
Needing to outsell the Hilux by only 3000 units in the remaining 58 days when they've just outsold them by a mere 170 in November suggests they'll only need to extend the calendar year by 18 months to achieve that goal.
Im excited at the prospect.

That is true, apart from F Series, Ranger is Ford’s most profitable Model.
Any Ford region that doesn’t have good pickup sales is underwater profit wise.

But are they in the same class together? I would have thought Puma in smaller class than ASX.

I own an older ASX.
Okay, nothing special about them, fairly boring in fact.

Mitsubishi may be the poor sister to Toyota, but they are bargain priced for a fully imported Japanese SUV, and highly reliable as a daily runabout.

Going on 7 years now from new, 105,000 Kms, and it's never missed a beat once.

I'll take a Jap SUV anyday over a Puma made in Romania.

No it was heavily redesigned in 2017, when it won engine of the year.

It also was awarded the best engine it its class 4 years running up to then, but your comment suits your narrative.

So I’m wondering, now that all manufacturers have seen that buyers will pay more when
there’s fewer vehicles to sell, could that mean an end to all the discounts and lower cost
vehicles that abounded before 2020?

I think while there are shortages of semiconductors, and now Magnesium for body panels, and demand outstrips supply, we will see these higher prices till at least the end of 2022.

Competition will then return as it always has after that once there is excess supply.

However, I think the distribution / retail model of how some car brands are sold may change leading to less discounting than we saw in pre-pandemic times.

Agreed, I can see some sort of “game theory” amongst all manufacturers
where they now see that ending discounts is good for everyone except customers…..

They can try, but we'll probably end up moving back towards the traditional selling model. There are a proportion of buyers (eg. those coming off lease) who simply won't wait 3-6 months for a replacement vehicle. As long as dealers have to bring in yard stock, there will be discounting to some extent. The only way I can see them getting around that is to bring in a single spec and not have a laundry list of options.
