Default Trading up from the AU: Questions...

I have talked about this for a while now, and would have liked to trade in my ute at the end of last, but the time just wasnt right. Ive taken my annual leave from Monday, and going to spend some of it looking for a ute to buy.

I have a couple of questions before I dive in:

1. My current ute. What trade in prices should I be looking at getting for it? Also what private sale price should I hope for if I go that path?

Details of the ute:

2001 AUII XR6 ute.

Trans: 5spd Manual
Colour: Liquid Silver

Accessories/modifications
AU momo blue/black leather steering wheel + manual gear knob
Colour-coded hardcover from Ford + hooks removed / plugs
18x8 AMG Quakes, 18" tyres
Redback 2.5" exhasut, single muffler, single rear resontator, JMM Street Fighter headers + modded cat, Twin Chrome tips
Clear side indicators, K+N HiFlow Panel Filter, BA XR scuff plates and inserts, Tickford intake Snorkel, Tinted Windows.

Always looked after and never driven hard. Oil changed before indicated every time. Never broken down for any reason. Ute always garaged.

Paint is in excellent condition.

140,000 km's.

Pic: http://img181.imageshack.us/my.php?i...akes0022hr.jpg (It now has colour coded side mirrors and a hard cover, with the hooks removed)

2. I am looking for a relatively low km (< 40000) BF XR8 ute with the 6spd auto box. Would like leather. Maybe XR6T for the right price... What sort of price should I be bargaining for with this ute? Again, both private and trade...

Cheers,

Hambo.

Redbook says

Trade in price guide* $8,100 - $9,500
National average price - private sale* $10,800 - $13,700

But remember mods hardly boost the price. And they really don't seem to for a trade in.

Redbook, I dont go much on it really. I would be extremely unhappy with anything under $10000, I am hoping for a bit more than that though...

For example, the ute I am looking at buying:

2005 FORD FALCON

BF XR8 Super Cab Utility 2dr SA 6sp 5.4i
Prices based on km 20,000 - 35,000
Trade in price guide* $23,500 - $25,800
National average price - private sale* $28,800 - $33,600
Price when new (RRP) $42,845

I have yet to see one ute with these features for less than $33000, I musnt be looking hard enough...

Don't expect much .... was told by a few car yards ... once it is over 150,000km ... they don't really look at them ... and if they take it ... expect $5,000 trade. Then they found my XLS ute that is modified was over 200,000 ... they wouldn't touch it at all ... they said I was best to keep it as 2nd vehicle ... or HOPE you can sell it with those kays on it.

It's not worth trading ... I'd try and sell it privately.

There's no way you'd get over $8K for trade ... you might get $10K for private sale ... mayube more ... depends on the aera you are in ... how well the car is presented ... and hope the person looking has no idea.

Damn, its not sounding good at all. Might have to chuck it on the internet and see what I can find.

Ok, so what price should I advertise it for? Im looking to sell fairly soon, but I dont want to give it away...

when iwas looking for my AU ute in june, with those kinds of mods as a buyer i would have been looking at $14,000 being a good buy. there are/were heaps of 2001/2002 XL/XLS for around $13,000 with those kinds of k's and they only had roll bars or bigger wheels, something along those lines. i bought my 200,000 egas 5 spd bog stock XL for $10,000 and nobody thinks i've paid too much (most people recommended i buy it when it as advertised at $12,000) but finding a buyer is the hardest part i would think, people are usually skeptical about buying modified cars as a tendency to drive them hard it's the holden/riceburner drivers that are usually the ones that don't help that impression...

Another vote for the Pursuit 250. BF XR8 will lose value over time whereas the Pursuit will hold it's value at worst. Think of it as an investment!

i was looking at doing the same thing...except for the XR8 bit

trade in is almost impossible to get something reasonable, remember they have a bit to do in order to sell it again...even if you think its in good nic

also found that the difference between manual and auto, even though a manual would normally get snapped up quickly is SFA difference...id get the same price for a standard Forte for my SR even though the difference to take the Forte to my level is worth more than the car itself

advertise it in other car forums, in the local paper... usually first car buyers looking for anything manual and cheap (like i did)...
listing on carsales or carpoint .. ive always believed that it gives them the oportunity to research the car first, or compare prices and have everything in writting, whereas an ad is they pop around, have a look you tell them whatever, they get inspected all is good they are happy.....

if i learnt anything in sales people dont travel more than 10km without intention on buying, list all the good features the ocassional bad ones(if any) and good ones again... psychology taught me that one

dont lie about it, dont twist the truth...offer things like RACQ can do inspections (if you know its in good nic and has a RWC) they think you did good by them, like you so they like the car..... just a tip and from bad exeperiences in the past

good luck

P.S. throw in stuff you wont be needing anymore that helps too

It's a little bit off topic for your thread, but this is what we just upgraded to tonight:

We have the wagon advertised for around $12k, and hope to get somewhere close to that (at least around 80%), and ours is kind of heavily modified for a wagon (ie, we won't get much back for the mods).

The good thing about a ute is, that they seem to hold their value better than sedans/wagons of similar age, as the Falcon utes have a great reputation with tradies. I have a mate who is looking for a ute, so I'll send him this thread and you two can talk.

And seeing you want a BA/F XR8, given the current petrol prices, and the fact that it really is a buyers market, expect to knock up to $5k off the advertised price - someone will need to sell badly enough to accept. As an example, we just paid under $20k for the explorer that redbook prices between $29 and $34k (private sale) - but the people selling it needed to offload it as they have had it on sale for over 8 weeks. Timing is critical. And remember that it's all about changeover price too, so if you buy one at a lower price than you'd expect, you can also sells yours for a bit lower too, as the changeover should still be less than if you paid top $$$ for the new and got max $$$ for the old.

Sorry about the longish post!

Another question, someone was asking me roughly what power the ute made now, and I didnt have much of an idea. What do you reckon?

172kw standard - Added 2.5" redback exhaust, JMM streetfighter headers, XR8 intake, KN panel filter

ED GLI V8 - I live in southern NSW, you still want my details?

Ok, looking around, Ive found these two that I like. One is from a dealer, the other is a private sale. Are these the sort of prices I should be looking for, or are they a little steep??

Private Sale

Dealer

Cheers,

personally i think people are charging too much at the moment for second hand xr8's. ford dropped the price on new ones when holden dropped the ss price. down the road from my work the ford dealer (geographe ford) has a new xr8 manual with premium sound and climate control for $40750. I've also heard that dealers are taking ridiculous offers on new xr8's because they're hard to sell these days. given that utes usually sell new for significantly less than sedans, you should pickup a second hand one much cheaper than the prices you listed so far...

another car dealer about 100m down the road from ford is selling a ba2 xr8 4spd auto for $36k with no premium sound, no climate control, no special options and 40k on the clock. hmmm which one seems the better deal. i think most people would spend the $5k extra and go the new bf2

OK had a couple of bites on the ute, so it might be gone soon. Does anyone know if the above utes are a good deal, or still a bit steep??

When you say "bites" do yo mean you might get something near what you are looking for or just getting what you can? I'm in the same boat. I'd like to get rid of my AU V8 ute but can't bear the financial loss while it's still running "OK" ..

Im not looking at letting the ute go for much less than it's worth. Ive said 15,000 to a few people, and they seemed to think it isnt a bad price. Im negotiable on that price also.

If I was to go to a dealer, I think I would just take what I could get really...

Another question:

With the release of the Orion soon, when would be the best time to purchase a BF / BFII XR8 ute or car? When is the orion released??
