G'day all, and thank you for having me on board.
Our 7th Falcon, an AU 98 Futura, has got me a bit foxed, it's running rich. Pulled out the spark plugs yesterday, black as. Cleaned them up and did a 250k run; pulled 'em out just now, and the plugs are sooty.... I'm wondering if any of you experts can send me in the right direction as to tuning... I really would appreciate your advice, the missus is giving the rounds of the kitchen as its her car and is sucking juice like there's no tomorrow.....and blowing black smoke... I don't know how to tune this, sorry, my ride is a ZC 351 with a carby, but the electronic Falcon is a bit beyond me.. Thank you for helping. quigs ? |

thermostat could be stuck open check that, also could be map sensor start with that man
|

could be the O2 sensor or temp sensor both will make it run rich

Hi I had the same problem with my 2000 AUII.Took it to Fords and they replaced the fuel pressure regulator and that fixed it. I was getting maybe 150 - 200kms a tank!!! Hubby took out the plugs and they were black as and had only been in 2 weeks, it was also blowing heaps of black smoke. The fuel pressure regulator controls how much fuel to give the injectors and mine was stuffed so it was pumping full fuel to the injectors. Cost me(hubby really) $450 to get fixed. Since having it done my exhaust is running grey and I now get 450 - 500 kms a tank. Hope this helps. Try getting a wreckers to fit one it might be cheaper. Good luck.

Well according to Fords its running fine!! The car has never run this good. And I think I know the difference between leaded and unleaded petrol.

That could be the problem with my mrs car then, never been able to solve it. She is lucky to get 250km per tank and she drives like, well a girl lol.
Its got 150,xxx km on it, and original 02 sensor by the looks of it, so thats my first port of call, but if that doesn't fix it what else could it be. P.S - only started running really pig rich after I put the XR6 cam in it out of my new engine

A blown T-MAP sensor will also cause rich running. If it's a pig to start, needing a lot of cranking over as well, the TMAP would be a suspect.
I found my hot idle was always rich with a bigger cam than std, but it was only recently I found idle too rich with the std cam too, at 315,000k's still with the original O2 sensor. Changed it and it's all good.
