For those who haven't seen it as yet, and if interested, read on.....
From July 05 issue of Wheels magazine - 5L of naturally aspirated V10 producing 373kw @ 7750rpm and 520nm of torque @ 6100rpm. The engine is all alloy weighing only 240kg, and redlines at 8250rpm. 7 speed sequential gearbox. The car weighs 1755kg. Performance figures - 0-60k - 2.4s 0-100k - 4.4s 0-160k - 9.4s 0-200k - 14.1s 0-400m - 12.5s @ 188kph (116mph) 5th, 6th, and 7th gear can reach it's 250kph limiter. Now that is a car which I wouldn't say no to being in my garage. Interestingly tested performance exceeded BMW's own claimed figures, being only a frag slower than Ferraris F360 F1, yet it can seat 4 adults in comfort. All from only 5L (and certainly no lightweight), whos says we need more than 5.4L or forced induction in our Coons..... Rick.

The fact that this engine behaves like a normal family car, yet can perform like a supercar when needed, speaks volumes for the development which BMW have put into this engine (whole vehicle) yet again. In any case, all of our road vehicles have technology which is slowly filtered down from the elite in racing, F1. It just happens that th likes of BMW (and others) get the technology a little quicker than the cars you and I can afford. And the peak numbers don't tell the full story, we would need to see a torque curve to what is really going on. Rick.

At last a Beemer I could own I guess this is what happens when you don't have to make engines up from already existing powerplants.
I havw watched older M5s on tarmac rallies ... fast but not a sports car, the M3s eat them in the curves. |

Ok mate, what in the hell is going on here!!!! : : Back to the topic at hand - I would have any of the past three models of M5 in a heartbeat, and the newest one would be my first choice. It is truly a weapon and that engine is a MASTER-FRIGGEN-PIECE. Anyone who disagrees about this point on the engine, well, I'm afraid that you simply are wrong. No, really - you are wrong. : You see, it's quite simple - it has won the Engine of the Year 2005 : http://www.rsportscars.com/eng/artic...gine_award.asp Not everyone likes the way it looks but I reckon it's the second best looking of the Bangled Beemers, after the M6. Awesome car and yet another example of a sports sedan should be built. Note to FPV - use this car as your benchmark and you will do well. :togo:

Monday 6th June 2005, 9.30am at Sydney Town Hall, I see a bronze coloured BMW M6 drive past on George Street heading north... I couldn't believe it, I mean the M5 is scheduled for sale here in July and the M6 in late '05, what the hell was this doing here? And btw, they look A LOT better in reality then some pics might suggest.

It apparantly beats anything up to Gallardos with 4 people in the car. Quite impressive. Dunno if it was completely run in or not too.
http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/sho...9&page=3&pp=35 -post #74 The E34 was the best looking IMO, and according to 'BMWCar' magazine, the best out of the first three, this comparo was done last year, before this one was came out. But will the launch control and driveline still be reliable in 20 years time? |

the new M5 and M6 have a button for 300kw or the top power 373kw! Wonder what difference in speed that equates to?

Never quite liked BMW's sports sedans. The M3 is OK, looks great.. but the M5, beh.
I wonder how it'll go when they put it against this piece of automotive art: 5439cc SOHC 24v Supercharged V8 350kW (469hp) @ 6100rpm 700Nm (517ftlbs) @ 2650 - 4500rpm 0-100km/h: 4.3 0-160km/h: 9.9 0-1/4 Mile: 12.5 @ 116mph Limited to 250 like the M5, and every other German sports sedan. Oh.. it weighs 1925kg. And costs $221,900 :( http://www.fast-autos.net/mercedes/03mercedese55.html For anyone who wants E55 stats. http://www.fast-autos.net/bmw/bmwe60m5.html <-- There's the new M5. Can't wait for a M5 vs E55 AMG test

http://archive.potatoesmc.com/admin/...aceE55vsM5.wmv Right-click and save as and find out... Anyone can take their biggest engine and chuck it in an average chassis and run quick straight line times... HSV make a living out of it.. ;) seriously tho, AMG's will never be as good as M cars because they're not fully fledged, ground-up engineered, all-round performance cars like M cars are...

As for not being all-around performance cars, rightio then. The BMW M5 and E55 AMG are extremley similar. Neither is built from the ground up as a performance car. In the E55's case, AMG get their mits on an E500, pull the motor out, stroke it, bolt on a Lysholm twin-screw supercharger, and do some head work etc. Then they change the exterior apperance slightly, change the interior. They re-work the suspension, steering, transmission etc. And you have an E55 AMG. BMW do much the same with an M5, except that now, unlike before, it gets a unique engine. 5.0litre V10 shared only with one car - M6. Its still a 545i under the skin though, which has been altered on the outside, inside, and had its suspension/driveline modified. FPV and HSV do exactly the same thing, but on a far lesser scale. Oh, and if you want to compare M's and AMG's dedicated track specials.. http://www.fast-autos.net/bmw/bmwm3csl.html <-- BMW E46 M3 CSL. http://www.fast-autos.net/mercedes/m...clkdtmamg.html <-- Mercedes-Benz CLK-DTM AMG. Neither M nor AMG cars are engineered from the ground-up as anything. They're extremley well re-engineered sports sedans, based around a family/luxury sedan. Back to the M5... I can't wait until an E55 vs M5 write up, should be really tasty. AMG vs M is like FPV vs HSV.. hehe.

these cars are nice but who canafford them 225,000 bucks and then i guess you can add options .now how about parking them . where , down at the school , grocery shops, gym, pub, club, pictures, mum and dads. trian station . ahhh yes your garage. no thanks. i'd cry over a $25000 dollar car with a key scratch , never mind 230 000 schmackos.
now let me see an xr 8 or gt or fairmont or phoon or xr6t, or just xr6. what could i do to the perfomance suspension engine , driveline . interior . for say $30,000 and yes it would still be less than $ 100,000. |

Not comparing apples with apples, but how will this piece of old tech compare
with the M5 ? Developed specifically for the 2006 Corvette Z06, this ultimate Gen IV small-block has a full 7.0 liters of displacement, a 7000-rpm redline and 500 horsepower with 475 lb.-ft. of torque. We borrowed some very important lessons learned from the C5-R racing program to put this engine on the street. If you compare it to our LS2, it's got a different front cover, oil pan, exhaust manifolds and cylinder heads. We cast a unique aluminum block for the LS7, with pressed-in cylinder sleeves, versus the cast-in sleeves of the LS2. Aluminum flat-top pistons inside the 4.125-inch cylinder bores give a compression ration of 11.0:1. Titanium connecting rods drive the forged steel crankshaft, moving through a 4-inch stroke. We gave the LS7 a dry-sump oiling system to assure proper lubrication at the high lateral g-forces that the Z06 is capable of – that system came straight from the racing program. Proper airflow is critical for the 427. That's why the cylinder heads yield better than a 40% increase in flow capability. The tunnel-like intake runners are a straight shot – the ports maintain this velocity to provide excellent low-end grunt and terrific horsepower in the high rev range. The aluminum heads themselves have 70-cc combustion chambers fed by large, 56-mm titanium intake valves. The exhaust valves are 41-mm, sodium-filled pieces. A unique hydraulic roller camshaft actuates the valves – the LS7's cam profile is derived from the C5-R program, providing .591-inch lift. Like other Gen IV engines, we used a composite, three-piece intake manifold – with further improved airflow for the LS7. A 90-mm-diameter, single bore, electronically controlled throttle body is the gateway to the induction system. High capacity 5-gram/second fuel injectors are mounted in the manifold assembly. On the exhaust side, we selected LS7-specific hydroformed steel tubular headers. A special quad-outlet collector flange dumps exhaust gases at the tip of the header outlet and into a "wide-mouth" catalytic converter. This greatly reduces the Z06's backpressure. Because of the special nature of this engine – the precision machining and balancing, along with all of the premium components – every LS7 engine will be assembled by hand in our new-from-the-ground-up Performance Build Center in Wixom, Michigan. This assembly center is staffed with highly trained engine-build specialists, who follow each engine through the 15 sub-assembly stations. The team completes 30 engines per day – completed, balanced and performance-tested, the engines are then shipped to the Corvette Assembly Plant in Bowling Green, Kentucky for mating with the Z06 chassis. The 427 Corvette returns! And Walter Mittys everywhere will be eating GT-class Porsches for breakfast on their morning commute.

If HSV get the balls to build the next GTS sedan with the 7 Litre Z06 powerplant Australia will make history in the Automotive world along side the BMW M5 as people moving 4 door Supercars!
All FPV have to do is build a GTHO. We are talking about a supercharged 5.4 donk. Ahh we can only dream.

If there is a new GTS, expect a PWR Supercharged LS2, or something along those lines. As for making history, done that already. Falcon GT-HO was the fastest sedan back in its day, HSV's GTS300 was as fast as the E39 M5. For Aussie cars to really have any global-scale impact, they need to be sold internationally. Not just here.
