Hi everyone
What would you do? If you had lost all your demerit points on your licence and you were given the following options, which would you choose? Option 1: Lose your licence for 3 months (13 weeks). Do not drive (or risk it) for that length of time with the inconvenience, but you get all of your points back in one hit at the end of the 3 months. OR Option 2: Choose the "good behaviour" option. This enables you to keep 2 points for 12 months. If you lose those two points during the 12 months, you lose your licence for 6 months, and with no "good behaviour" option. You get all points back at the end of the 12 months. Bear in mind that in SA, the tolerances are usually generous, 10% of speed limit plus 3kmh (so in 60 zone, tolerance is 69kmh) so it is quite hard to get a speeding fine of a single point. If you get done speeding here, you usually get a 3 pointer. So, which one would you choose? Suffer for 3 months and get all the points back quick, or try and stick it out for 12 months on 2 points and risk losing licence for even longer??? Jac

if there are 2 cars in the family I would get my partner a bike and take the 12 month option
but if you use the car on a regular basis, seriously consider the 12 month option

Yeah, it is HARD to be good! If I thought I was good enough to go the next 12 months without a single fine, I probably would have been good enough not to get 5 of them in the last two years! However, it seems I am not and I dont really think I could go 12 months without a fine.
I might add, I have not lost any points for anything other than speeding - I have never had a parking ticket, red light ticket or driven drunk. And half of my fines are from Vic! Doing 107 in 100 zone FFS! Anyways, it looks like I might be ok since I have a plan (Dad might take my latest points for me), but I still have to get through until mid next year before I get some more points back! I am trying to be VERY good! Bloody cars LOL - sometimes I wish driving them bored me to tears! Would be cheaper! Hehe.

Id just go with the 2 points.
Then again ive never been done for speeding and don't plan to.. Touch wood. You do the crime you pay the time as they say, if you can't drive without speeding then take the 3 month option... Its not that hard not to speed! |

Yeh its a bit like that!
You should be ok with the 2 point option tho, just means you have to be extra careful and when you do give it some make sure your out in the middle of no where.. |

I took the 12 month option when I lost all my points. I just bit the bullet and stuck a note on my steering wheel reminding my of the consequences. It looked a bit goofy but it worked....

Think yourself lucky, in QLD you get 1 point for 12 Mths!
Having been in the situation you are in, I chose the 1 point as I needed my licence for work. Went OK for 9 Mths and got done for speeding. Only option left was to go to court and appeal the fine. By the time it went to court my 12 Mths had passed. The Magistrate waved the points but still had to pay the fine. Went to Trans Dept and was given all points back. Seems that since I went to court and the Magistrate made judgment I recieved back the 3points from the last fine as well! Still it cost me the fine and $800 for a solicitor for about 10Mins work but as far as I'm concerned it was money well spent. :eclipsee_

Choose the good behaivour for twelve months.
Either way, you will have a blemish on your record. But it looks better with a good behaivour mark instead of a cancellation / revoke. Regards Paul

even if you pick B so you dont have a record or a X on your name, u cant garrantee you will make it that whole year even if u do drive like a grandma! i just got back from my 3 months, so yes i picked A and i rekon its the best option overall. Yes it sucked, almost 2years no fines then two 3 pointers in 5 months : to be honest i hated it but.. im back now and not a worry in the world other wise id still have another 9 month of watchin my a** praying i dont get a fine of 55 in a 50 : To be honest either work, i have mates who went the whole year and were fine but also have mates who didnt make it now dont have it for 6 months! so its up to you mate its just which works best for you!! good luck!

Take option B. I did a similar thing around Twelve years ago in Victoria. You really don’t want to loose your licence if you can avoid it. Remember, if you loose your licence, This will work against you every time you ring up for insurance or if you end up in court at a later date.
Cheers, Danny

I think it depends on how many commitments you have in your car ie, picking up kids taking them here and there , getting to work etc, etc,
I would rather opt for option 1 but in reality i would prob have to pull my head in and run the gauntlet for the 12 months.

How good do you think you can be Jac? Can you garantee you wont be running late for anything? with 2 youngsters might be difficult perhaps? (not saying that they are difficult but organising can get hectic!) Can Eamon do most of the day to day driving etc?
Probably need to answer yes to these with a medium degree of confidence before deciding, but that's just my arseh........ oops i mean opinion :

I would go option b.
I have never been pulled over by the police, only had 1 speeding fine (photo in the mail), never drink and drive and obey the rules. How hard is it though for men/women out there to obey the law and not speed. Some of you say that you will have to pull your head in and be good for 12mths, if you can do it for 12mths why not drive like that all the time as you would not be in that situation to lose your licence and have to choose between option a or option b. |

Just had to make this option... and my choice was 12 months. As a truck driver I had no choice really. Lose my job and go on the dole or keep my licence and job and hope for the best. By the way I only lost mine because I didn't have P plates up on my garbage truck Damn stupid 3 points for no p's
Cheers Ben

ive got 2 points on my Probationary licence atm, and if i lost mine i would take the three month option because im at uni and can walk there (usually do anyway). but as you have a family jac, option B is probably best for you.

Id take the good behaviour option. Plus goin easy on the throttle will mean less fuel consumption.
Ive never lost any points. Been pulled over twice and never got fined either. First time I got a warning and the second time I basically told the cop he had no evidence and voila no fine. |

I say go with option B... I couldn't imagine not driving for 3 months (well I'd need to for work anyways - how about you?).
But if you didn't drive, imagine the money you'd save on fuel! That'd be a decent mod in itself PS: This should be a poll ;)
