Default Why is this country so strange?

I am sure others are worse, but here is my situation.

There is a very good chance I am buying a car from tassie within a couple of weeks. I am getting a RACT RWC done there before I buy it to make sure everything is ok.

So I went to Vic Roads today and asked do I have to get a RWC done again when I register it in my name in Vic. The answer was yes. So I asked why? we are in the same country, abide by the same laws, wtf do I have to get the check again.

She said I dont know.

Great.

So who does know? Why on gods name would a RWC check be any different in tassie than in Vic?

And why the heck aren't the laws the same, its like people go out of there way to confuse and annoy people when it should be a straight forward process.

AFAIK a RWC check, once passed, is good for 14 days. So if I register it over here within 14 days whats the problem!

Can anyone help clarify this?

Different laws in each state.
Same as a Vic RWC means jack ИИИИ in NSW.

Same reason NSW, VIC and Qld all have different Railway gauges, it's a wonder that we all drive on the same side of the road.

I saw this article in the local paper today:

Rumour has it that Ireland is contemplating switching to left-hand drive vehicles and driving on the right-hand side of the road as does Europe and the US and other countries. The plan is for the new rules to apply to cars first. If that's successful, then trucks and the like will also switch.

Lucky we're in Oz. lol

That does sound very Irish, does that mean that trucks would be on the left of the road whilst all the cars would be driving on the right??? Yeah, right! I would have though that trucks would pose less of a problem as their hieght over most vehicles allows them such a good veiw of the road ahead.

Apparently one of the northern European countries (Finland or the like) swaped over in the early '70's. they made the change at 5pm on a week night so that everyone had the entire day to tlk about it and remember it was about to happen.

C'mon, most guv'mint customer service people look at the FAQ list and read from the script. Ask anything more than that and you'll get blank expressions and "I dunno, that's just the rules."

Yup very Irish humour -

BUT, yes it is a long term goal for the world to be left-hand drive, I wish we had been so from start, some savings per vehicle.

A gradual 'acceptance' in registration of newer LHD's would start this.

Willit be realised? dunno.

Hey, yea you can start getting our good cars. You're welcome to all the LHD FWD econoboxes you want. Especially the chevy cavaliers, dodge neons, and escorts (we don't have the good escorts here :( )

Is there any body that can give me a definate answer as to what the differences are? or someone I can contact?

Theres no point chasing someone down about this as theres no loop holes, its all set in concrete. If you want to register a car in Victoria you must supply Vicroads with a current RWC from Victoria, full stop.

Each state has their own independent traffic authority such as vicroads, rta etc which in turn set their own rules, regulations and red tape. For example in NSW you can get an emmisions test for free to get an engineers certificate whereas Vicorads has made us lucky Victorians pay $3000 for that same free privilidge in NSW, go figure....

Indeed it is. I feel your pain man, I'm in the process of registering a car in NSW that I bought in Canberra. Crazy thing is, because the car has been through two sets of hands without ownership details being changed the ACT motor registry took one look at the paper trail of receipts and said they didn't recognise my ownership of the vehicle, "oh and you're going to have to chase down the original owners and get both their signatures because only one of them has signed the change of ownership papers".

Weirdly enough, the NSW RTA have no problem with my proof of ownership, travel 10Km over the border and everything changes! It's completely rooted. Only problem is that any car brought over the border has to go through a blue slip (unregistered vehicle) inspection. Which can only be done by a mechanic registered as part of the AUVIS scheme whatever the hell that is. The local blue slip provider happens to be a complete pain in the rear end, so far I've done about five hours worth of completely unnecessary work on the damn thing.

So what I wanna know is this, If an ACT registered vehicle is considered unregistered/unroadworthy in NSW for change of ownership purposes, why is it that ACT plated vehicles are allowed to freely travel on NSW roads? Same applies to Polyal's situation. It's just another way to make money off the unsuspecting public.

Kamov KA-50 Hokum not only has an ejector seat, but twin contra-rotating rotors.

So you have TWO sets of rotors to go through...

Not my idea of fun.

I would imagine the ejector system would jetteson the blades (flying off at quite a speed) before ejecting.

Or it could fire downwards.

As mentioned - different state, different laws.

We dont even have RWCs in SA - only time a vehicle is inspected is if its brought from interstate or imported or if issued with a defect notice.

Victoria will always be right hand drive even if the rest of Australia went to LHD.
Why?
The cost of moving each speed camera would bankrupt the state.....

hahaha thats a good point.... however it would create a stack of jobs.....which would in turn looks great for the states employment stats..... (they can employ me....im looking to change jobs - something that actually pays money would be nice)
