Tonight i absolutely shat my self coming home from work. I own a 95 EF Futura and Im driving down a hill and was mucking around with the transmission and I put the car into neutrual and let it roll down the hill. Got the bottom of the hill went to put it back into drive, but slipped and some how knocked it into reverse at 50 km/h. The car went balistic, oil light came on, battery light came on. I lost all power steering I thought this is it, the cars F^%ked. I pulled over and switched it off. I sat there for about 15 minutes just letting the car relax. Luckily when i turned it back over it started all ok and i drove it home. Ive never done that before and really dont want to do it again, cant be good for the car...poor thing :(

Hahaha I've always wondered what would happen if you tried that... Now I know.
A female cousin of mine managed to put her auto daihatsu or whatever into park whilst still moving and according to those present, it sounded baaaaddd.

ive done it, driving past my mates house leaving the party, went to put the column shift auto into neutral to give it a rev, went too far... didnt sound healthy.
have done it to the cortina aswell, for some reason i put it into park at the lights before i had stopped moving... that wasnt very graceful either

i think you lost power steering and all the lights came on because the engine would have stalled when you put it in reverse...you are lucky it didnt lock the rear wheels and slide you into a pole!

You anly stalled the engine, nothing bad. Well, except to the transmission, they don't like being turned both ways. I did it once at 80kph, transmission was fine for about 3 months....

Did it in my XC years ago at about 70kph. Rears locked for a second then the engine stalled and it just rolled.. till I got it back into N 1/2 a second later. Not a good thing to do but I've never actually heard of an engine or box dieing from it to be honest.

I did mine at 60kph when i had the BA shifter just installed and not set correctly, was playing and knocked into reverse, car chirped a little and stalled, started it again, still going strong.

could not agree more, you know this sort of thing happens a lot more than you would credit with our "auto" brethren, especially when they get too excited...... they bang it into "D" for Drag and then when they are being pasted by their mates in the manual..... its bang her into "R" for race..... : sorry just a bit more cheek from a fellow self shifter cheers Peter

A bloke I used to know in melbourne had a real nice HZ station wagon with a strong 308, turbo 400 and a 9 inch. one of his favourite tricks was to be driving along at 70 or 80 kph with an unsuspecting passener was to tell em to watch this and before they can ask what , would floor it and stuff it into reverse . the resulting smoke and 360's was pretty impressive, but he only did it once with me in his car .The swelling on the side of his head was there for about 2 weeks . For all the times he used to do it , his trans stood up to it. the same cant be said for his rims and tyres once , he smacked a gutter real good one night and couldnt drive home on 1 good wheel!

I did it in a renta car EF many years ago. 60km/h slipped it into reverse and did some nice Tick shaped skids (on a private road). Did it one more time and then the car did not work in reverse anymore.
The things you do when you are young, stupid and in a rental car :

It's not a good idea to coast down hills in neutral. At least all you damaged was your pride and hopefully the box is alright.

When I was about 19 we were traveling from Kalgoorlie to Southern Cross in an HQ Premier (I think) Doing 120 kmh the bloke in the back stretched his legs into front console and kicked the shifter into reverse. It was like slow motion, heard the clicks, everyone looked at each other with bulging eyes and BANG! SCREECH, BOUNCE, lots of smoke and a stuffed tranny.
A real eye opening experience

Now I don't know about Falcons... but on my lowly automatic Pintara, you can push it from 1, 2 to D without using the button release thing... and into N and back to D also... but you can't put it into reverse without using the button. Are Falcons like this?

I was driving my idiot "mate" home one night, he was drunk and through my car into reverse at about 50km/h and the same thing happened. I was about to punch him in the head (mate or not!) but luckily it started and drove as normal.

theyre designed so they dont to it accidentally... you have to hold the button in to select above drive or reverse... you can select down to 2, but not 1st, as it would go straight into first gear and spin you around...
all the cxar does is stall... to prevent any major damage, its usually only got one or two safety stops though, after that youll be seeing a bit of smoke or a bang... been in one go bang... a laser... 90ks in d, up into park... not nice... although it was only a wholesale car... doesnt matter... |

While driving along (at lowish speed) in my bothers old POS 89 Civic, we used to snap it into R and quickly back to D on purpose. It gave the trans such a hiding but man it was funny. The trans was already screwed but we must have made it worse. That car copped so much abuse, he never topped up the oil in the year or so he had it either. He drove it in a demolition derby a year ago.
