I have seen in threads people thinking we may have a repeat of the 1972 supercar rage/protests but IMHO I think the cars are so far removed from the cars of that era it will never happen. People are also more informed now as not to believe such hype. Whats your opinion.

Its 2006. Theres cars form other countries that you can buy here that are heaps quicker than the Aussie stuff. I doubt they will stop Ford or Holden from making faster cars unless they got ridiculous.

So long as the politicians, media and road authorities continue to take Harrold Scruby and friends (think Barney the Dinosaur) with a grain of salt.

People are more sceptical now about the media and polititians than they were in 1972. Plus, I don't think too many would be willing to accept defeat as easily as they did back then.

Don't bet on it...don't be surprised to see cars limited to 200kw in the future.
Although the day of the HO is gone and there are many more powerful cars out there ...none had the shear brute strength of the HO...however fuel concerns and scruby's are having an impact.

More cars are as fast as the HO and more and more everyday cars are moving closer to that mark but nowdays they actually brake/stop and go round corners and their passive and active safety is far beyond that of a HO.

japan has the power restriction 280 hp i think, cant see it ever coming to that here ,our pollys are too smart at taxing us, they will put a performance tax on cars over 50kw rather than fight with car companies

There is a major difference between the cars of late 60's and early 70's compared to today. Back then cars had big HP engines put into cars with very old (obviously) technology.
Since then car safety has increased dramatically, so the safety factor isn't the same, only thing they need to look at is driver training.

I'd be more concerned about a possible oil crisis rather than another "musclecar" scare.

Japan never had any power restrictions, it was a gentlemens agreement between the auto manufactureres and was broken by all of them on most of their performance models: cae in point, the GT-R.
And the agreement has ended not long ago, too bad there are fewer performance models coming out of there now. |

Do you think it is a coincidence that no local manufacturer has released a car over 300kW, it is a very sensitive topic I think. Of course there are AMG Mercs with well over that but they are more expensive 3yo than a FPV/HSV new. It will be interesting to see what happens with the new HSV (VE).

I think the car makers are being catious(can not spell), But when ya think about it didnt a chrysler show up in the seventies 440BBL and not long after the letter to the ford boss from the cops arrived. (there never was and never will be a phase 4 was the reply)
Now we have 290kw cars and chrysler wih another 300kw monster. De-Javu ?? We should be a little bit worried John
