Default Police Car disguised as a Taxi?!?!

heya all,

This evening on my way home (sydney), I saw a Taxi, a normal BA taxi. Odd thing is I looked at is as I drove past and I saw the copper l.e.d blue/red lights in the rear window, on the dash, on either side of the TAXI sign on the roof and 2 uniformed policemen inside, I saw the blue shirts with badges.

Thought I was seeing things till they gave chase to an unsuspecting hoon.. Looked kinda weird seeing a taxi take off after someone.

Just thought id share that with you all. Surely thats not legal?

Sounds bizarre that they would do this, but there you go!!

The thing that would worry me if a taxi suddenly put lights on and wanted me to pull over is that what if it was a BS thing.

How would you truly know?

A mate pulled a stunt on me with the lights one night. I couldn't visualise the car (out the back of the bush road on the way to the beach) with no street lights so I kept going until I could make out the car before I pulled over.

There are some loonies out there and it pays to ensure your own safety.

Food For Thought.

I wonder how may slow down for fixed speed camera's, or will not run the orange on red light cameras, but once away from the fixed camera speed up, or run the orange on non camera lights?

let me get this straight.

cops are allowed to use TAXI's, allowed to put speed camera in use signs IN FRONT of there car so you cant see it. seen this one on the highway comin home one night. a BEACH towel over the door so you couldnt see the police stickers on the side. and this is all legal and the government are just turning a blind eye to it. i say thats BULL S*%T

Actually, it's far from stupid. Let's say there are 10 taxis on the road for every cop car. You know that there is at least one cop car dressed as a taxi, so effectively instead of having one visual sign to slow down (marked car), there are now 11.

What this does is keep drivers guessing every time they see a cab (well, the ones that know that there is a cop car dressed as a cab anyway), and is actually a very effective way of enforcing the road rules passively, because drivers will now see a taxi and wonder if it could be a cop, so they may actually look at what speed they are doing, and what sort of driver behaviour they are displaying (aggressiveness, stupidity, hooning etc). So what you have done with this thread is actually enhance the effect of the cop car dressed as a cab - I'm sure the police would be very grateful to you for the free advertising and education campaign provided herein.

Having said that, I wouldn't pull over if a cab toots/flashes you, unless it has the red and blue lights, or pull over in a public place, like an open servo, or maccas etc - just in case it's not a cop, and just an idiot in a cab.

Surely you aren't saying that the police only pull people over if they have done something stupid like speeding or whatever...

That is not quite true... I have been pulled over randomly.. it was for a supposed breath test...

I haven't had a problem with it either but one cop did actually go over my car just recently (had a chuckle too the bugga at my oops spot).. said he liked it and wanted one but his wife wouldn't allow him to have a Ford.. Yes, I had a smart comment to make but thankfully that time he realised I wasn't being nasty, just strange :

But in saying this, I am not so sure I would be keen to pull over if it were a Taxi.. I think I would do what I was told by a copper once, if you are unsure, ring 000 - give location etc and see if a car is there.. tell them that you are not pulling up until you either reach a service station or a police station.

Nope. I have been pulled over for a 'hello' talk as well. This will happen if the police are driving a candy car with flashing lights and all sirens blazing or driving around in a Camry with a bowls hat on the parcel shelf.

But if you went past them doing 40 k's over the limit, because you didnt know they were cops, and you got done, doesnt mean the cops are the ones in the wrong? If you get done doing this, its a fair cop _2:
