Default light grey Airbag cover to suit steering wheel

hi

i bought a woodgrain steering wheel from eBay:

the leather on the wheel is a different colour to my airbag cover. i was wondering if anyone knows if i can just replace the airbag cover with one that matches, and how much it might cost.

thanks in advance

cheers

I'm not sure if you can just swap the cover on the airbags or if you have to swap the whole airbag mechanism. It might be all integrated I believe. Nice wheel though, I would've bought one too if they were the black leather. I know a few people have used vinyl dye to go from the light grey to the darker black, but this won't really work going the other way.

You should read the forums more often
I posted this in the AU falcon.com.au section the other day when I was thinking of buying one.
http://www.fordforums.com.au/showthread.php?t=73895

I went down and bought one but have not fitted it yet

I must say I have an LTD with the same steering wheel but mine is worn where the leather meets the wood so a cheap way of fixing it.

I have never noticed the airbag being a different colour, maybe the LTD airbags were a different colour than the rest

There should be places around (auto trimmers etc) where you'd be able to get the leather re-dyed darker. I reckon that'd look better, since it'd fit in with the whole dash. No idea what it would cost though.

I have black leather and dash / plastic all around in my car and this one thing is a lighter grey that stands out like a sore thumb. Definately going to dye it some time. Good luck getting it matched. Can you post up a photo for us when you get it sorted?

thats jonbays car, mine is at www.aufalcon.com/blackghia i just used it to show the same wheel installed.

bayford said they can get a airbag to match, from a ltd probably, but it will cost $1,000.

i might ring a few wreckers to see if they got them or auto trimmers to see if tyhey can dye it, otherwise i might just put up with it and install it as is if its too much money or hassle.

I'm pretty sure JC has done some dying as well. I'm sure he's alive to tell us about it though! :

Here are a couple of photos of my original wheel.
In the second one you can see the wear on the leather.
The new wheel seems to be very similar except the wood is a fraction lighter.

Thats why you pay the big bucks, all that polished timber and chrome costs mega bucks!!!

The airbag is a slighly different colour to the leather on the wheel.
To tell you the truth I hadn't noticed it until jones aus mentioned it.

Yep, car is a stock standard AU11 LTD.
The only mods are it has been converted to gas and colourcoded mudflaps have been put on.

I had a DC ltd for quite a few years and kept it in pristine condition. I would have still had it except some low life wanted it more than me and pinched it from outside the comedy club in Carlton a couple of years ago.

I really liked the digital speedo in the DC,

The satnav in the AU is a great bonus to the Melways challenged

was looking at the parts database, and found this

ER 14B256 A1 COVER AIRBAG, FORTE, AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION, COLUMN SHIFT, MEDIUM GRAPHITE $58.30

can anyone confirm if this is just an airbag cover?

medium graphite is the same colour that the wheel is according to the parts database

Hi mate
As far as I can establish from the diagram it is just the cover that sits over the airbag.

Cheers
Russ
