Most likely over the $AU200K mark, I don't care how die hard you are, I would much rather a Roaring Forties turn key for around $AU100K and I know most others out their would think the same way.

I would much rather a replica of a 66 Le Mans car made right here in Oz and the money and jobs stay right here as well, that plus I can have it built how I want it not how it comes off the production line then spend another $XXXXX's to get it how I want it.

They are currently building these with the 4.6 Boss engine so putting the 5.4 wouldn't be much more, then throw in something like the YT SC for another $10K and you have one helluva mutha.

Best of all you could buy 2 RF cars for the price of one US GT

Not only that, you can customise the build and make it exactly the way you want a GT 40 to be, not the way Ford think a GT (US) should be. The 4.6 has a deck hight difference of just over 1 inch, lower than a Windsor. There are some engineering difficulties to overcome to fit a 5.4 but the 4.6 is defiantly the way to go. There is a chassis undergoing some serious modification to fit the big Boss at the moment, however, I hardly think that it’s worth the trouble. :Up_to_som

I think the Mustangs were around the $AU140K mark Tony, but on that though I have noticed that most are second hand and second hand they can be had for as little as $US30K.

As for why Ford don't bring them themselves, well at $AU315K how many do you think they would need to sell, as was just said before most would rather a European exotic rather than a nostalgic look back that will only be pretty short lived really. However as I said the diehard GT40 fan will still get a Roarin-Forties repro at a fraction of the price.

Problem is the orignal Roaring Forties owner went bankrupt and no longer make turn key GT40s. Something about the guy who made the bodys for them decided to pack up and find god.

Funny part is if you already own a mustang and bring it here the conversion and compliancing is $25,ooo max. If you buy a car through them they charge you massive $$$, you could land a GT5oo here for $11o,ooo if you bought and shipped the car youself and had them convert, comply & reg it.

You cant personally import a car unless youve owned it for 12 months or more.

So add the cost of living in the US for 12 months, then it wont be any cheaper to try and do it yourself.

WRONG, you cant personally import a car IF that model is sold here in australia by the manufacturer. I wanted to bring in a SLK 55 AMG as i could get one shipped for about 85K as opposed to $175K here plus on roads and options.

Here is the legislation

Visitors, temporary residents, foreign diplomatic personnel, companies and corporations are not eligible to import a vehicle under the personal import scheme.

To be eligible for a personal import the following criteria must be satisfied:

1. the vehicle has been owned and used by the applicant for a continuous period of at least 12 months (3 months where ownership and use of the vehicle commenced before 8 May 2000);
2. at the time the vehicle is imported, the applicant is:
i. an Australian citizen or an Australian permanent resident; or
ii. a person who has applied to become an Australian citizen or an Australian permanent resident;
3. the applicant is of an age that entitles him or her to hold a licence or a permit to drive a road vehicle of that type;
4. the applicant undertakes to comply with any requirements as to road safety that are imposed in respect of the vehicle by the Administrator; and
5. the applicant has not imported a road vehicle owned by him/her within the year ending on the day on which the vehicle in respect of which the application is made is landed in Australia. If an applicant has imported a vehicle under any other provisions in that time, approval will not be granted.

The criteria outlined at (a) to (e) above are mandatory criteria as included in Regulation 13 of the Motor Vehicle Standards Regulations 1989. The criteria will be strictly enforced.

Once again that applies only to car's that car companies sell here, if the model isn't available here your right. I know because i was going to bring a GT5oo in but due to the fact that the us dealer's had $15-25K markup on them i couldn't afford it, i then looked at the AMG which is where i encountered this rule seeing as Merc Benze sell these here.

Ring crossover conversions tomorrow morning and tell them you want to buy a used GT5oo and want them to convert it and comply it.

There's still plenty sitting in dealer show rooms, thanfully dealer's here don't markup car's like they do over there. Most dealer's are asking $25k + over RRP on the shelby's.

Under the new rules, vehicles manufactured before 1 January 1989 may be imported without restriction. A RAW is a business that has been approved to import and plate up to 100 used

I rang crossover conversions and got a quote faxed to me, i'll try and find it. I told them i know trying to get a new Shelby was near impossible and that i was prepared to buy and ship back a used one. I had to buy and deliver it to their yard in the u.s, they were going to ship it aus, convert it, comply it then register it for me. At no point did they mention that i needed to own it for 12months, it wasn't listed anywhere on the quote either. When i rang them in october about bringing a merc back they told me that if it's imported by the manuf that i had to be able to proove that i owned it for a min of 12 months before i could register it.

Exactly, they were going to organise getting it into the country and legal, which im sure Crossover has sizable fees involved.

Im talking about someone going over to the US, buying a Mustang and trying to bring it back themsleves, cutting out the middle man. This is what you cant do.

Going off the offical RTA website means ****, it also states in another section that 1 in 5 repairable writeoff's get called back over the pit's for an identity check. In reality anything under 1o year's old get's put over th pit's for the check...................Even the clowns on the rta hotline will tell you the wrong thing.

It aint the RTA website (which is a state thing), its the Department of Transport and Regional services which is a national department. Anyway If you think you can import the car yourself outside of the law then knock yourself out :

The difference is I think you will find XR6 Martin that you cannot comply this vehicle for registration, if however the vehicle is over 15 (used to be) years old then you can.

You can import a SLK55 Leigh but you can't reg it for the road, you can however bring it over for closed circuit racing, I think there are also exemptions for certain open tarmac Targa style races.

You can import a Mustang, a GT or any other car that is not currently sold as new by a manufacturer here, the Hummer can still be imported but only the H1 and H2 but not the H3 as it will be soon imported by GM-H making it a manufacturer sold vehicle. Just as the GM pick ups and Suburbans are still being brought in by private importers and then simply taken to the compliance engineers for final inspection and plating.

You can do all of the conversion work if you like but you will still need to pay a fee to get compliance, this is payed to the holder of the current compliance agent licence.

The whole 12 month thing is about not having to pay duties on the vehicle, if you bring it as soon as you buy it then you are liable for full duties at the time, however if you have owned the vehicle and used it for 12 months then you can bring it over with minimal duty applicable. I can't remember the exact terms as it's been some time since I had anything to do with it, one of my first jobs was for a panel shop that did alot of conversion work in the late 80's.

The easiest way around this is to take 2 trips over, the first to buy it and you stay their for a couple of months, more if you can, the second is to organize shipping from their rather than through an agent here. You need to go over and stay for a while to show that you have actually used the car in the 12 months that you have owned it. Even if you kept it at a relatives and went and stayed their 2 or 3 times in the 12 months for a month each time, this would be enough to show continued ownership and use of the vehicle.

You can reg a slk for the road, ivé been in one. But the guy bought it through a dealer.
