Default New Police car

I thought that I had seen everything that the police could throw at us, in the way of patrol cars. That was until today when I drove past the police vehicle centre at Wetherill Park.To my surprise sitting in the front was a Lotus Elise in full police livery, lights and all.It certainly stood out like the proverbial, being bright yellow in colour you can't miss it.Didn't look half bad either. So all the people in Sydney, you have been warned.

There is. It is provided free for a certain amount of time by Chrysler. Victoria Police would not actually pay to have it. It's like the Saab, the BMW convertible and the HSV Coupe, all free as a promo exercise for the car builder.

I drove one of these things a few years back, not overly fast in a straight line, but jeez they're a hoot around corners. It's like a gokart of the road, you can throw it around roundabouts and tight corners

Only dramas is you need a certificate in yoga to get in the thing

The current models with the 141kW 1.8litre Toyota engine have enough power to slaughter any FPV except a Typhoon and any HSV except a VE in a straight line. They're also faster then Evo's and STi's. Makes this the fastest police car ever used in Australia as far as I know.

The one I was in was like a billy kart. You were virtually sitting inside a sheetmetal box with all the rivets and bolts visible along all the seams and joins. No carpet or the like, the only bit that looked finished was the simple dash and stereo area

Wasnt built for comfort though, would of been good to punt around a racetrack. Stuffed if i know where the coppers find a place to put the radio & equipment

Yes but he did say a few years ago which means quarters a smidge under 15 seconds & a top speed of around 200. This is the fast one is the Exige S with the supercharger (in acceleration at least anyway) but I think it's a shame the Toyota engined cars are so much heavier then the originals.

Uhm, even the first Elise, which had an 88kW 1.8litre Rover K-Series engine, was capable of 13's in the 1/4 mile, mid-high. There's never been an Elise as slow as what you're talking about.

Four or five years ago would be powered by the K-Series 1.8 but at around 116kW, which means consistant 13.5s. Not as fast as the 2ZZ-GE Toyota motor, but still able to hose most V8 Aussie sedans. With 116kW. Ah the joys of power/weight....

Nope they're lucky to meek out high 14s the factory somewhat optimistically stated 14.7, high 13s is pure fantasy for the early models even taking into account the Toymotor powered ones are about 50% heavier then them.

I'd like to see how they go driving them. Close ratios and manual. You have to be quick on your toes whilst concentrating on chasing someone down.

Even then... there's not much 700kg of aluminium, fibreglass, carbon fibre and plastic is going to do to 1700kg of steel and plastic.

You guys do realise that it's a lotus PR stunt - and in no way an actual pursuit car?

Its probably used for the Police Citizen's Youth Club.
