Default a question on legalities

Hi fellas
I just wanted to ask a quick question about something that one of my friends have done to their cars. They have stripped the back seats out of their mistubishi mirage and bolted a subwoofer to the floor. I was under the impression that this wasn't a legal thing to do but they are absolutley sure that it is. I just wanted to get your guys opinion on it
thanks
Brad

i am absolutely sure it is illegal. let alone the sub being there. there by law has to be a back seat if it came with one from the factory.

If they went to vic road (or there state authority) they can have the car registered as a 2 seater, & thus legally take out the seat belts aswell

This is true.
The vehicle will have to be re-registerd as a 2 seater. It will have to pass all relevent design rules.

What is it with Mirage drivers???? :

same thing if you want to run race harnesses in the front of your car, you cant do it unless its registered as a 2 seater, and therefore doesnt have the risk of the harness cutting the head off the person in the back

although i cant see a problem with pulling the back seat out! except for the ****y reason hehehe now if he was doing it to save weight for the 1/4 mile it would be different ;)

I don't see why they can't take the seat out legally - it just means that he's turned the car into a 2 seater. If they are caught with more than 2 people in the car, then they get in trouble. Also you wouldn't lose change with a big subwoofer, the magnet on the sucker would collect it all :hihi:

So its a money SAVING device.. ill tell mum that.

If he takes it out i would recomend going to VicRoads (or whoever), and getting it registered as a two seater so the Police cant get him on anything. I cant see a problem with it, if the seat belts are removed and the seat is also, so that he cant carry people in it.

Yeah I'd tell him to check it with Vic Roads just to be sure.

lol whats wrong with taking ya back seat out???? :P

did it to my escort but it was mainly to save weight and stop ppl from sitting in the back and weighing i down hehehehe

all i got to do now is take out the seatbelts and re-register it as a 2seater once ive rebuilt it

btw it would look alot better if the guys got a custom wall made for the sub so it doesnt look real dodgy, well thats just my two cents

some cars use the back seat as part of the bracing/overall structural strength of the car. thats why commodore's dont have a split fold rear seat - perhaps some smaller cars use this idea also
