Best Carb Option For 1600 Escort

Hi, Just brought a mk2 2dr 1600, stock standard. I want to get some performance out of it while leaving the original engine in it. Ill be fitting extractors and exhaust, will be getting the cam done (any suggestions for that would be great) and looking at different carbie options. Im on a bit of a budget so would like to go for second hand or recond carbie and manifold. Just wondering what will give me the best performance for my $$ (don't want to spend much more than $1000.)
Any suggestions would be great...

On a budget, a single 42mm side draught weber would be my choice if you aren't going radical with the mods.

Assuming you're running a single barrel downdraft, just upgrading to a dual barrel and fitting a set of extractors will be good enough within your budget.
I'm not a huge fan of side-drafts, but if your sticking with the x-flow, its a good option.
Personally, if it was my $1000, I'd ditch the 1600, fit a 2lt, extractors, and a DFAV40 off a V6 Capri.

a single sidedraft carbie is hard to find a manifold for, i heard redline may be doing a reproduction sometime this year, but if i was you id go with whooligans plan.

2 litres are good motors, they make good reliable power, 1600 are underpowered compared to pintos. I am building a hot 1600 for my club car, looking back now, it would have been so much cheaper just to have bought a standard 2 litre.

Cheers guys looking into those options now, would like to keep the old 1600 but am starting to see the sense in bolting in a 2L as there are alot around, alot of parts and they seem to be cheaper to do up.
