Default Capri

Caradvice have a pic of a new Ford Capri - seems related to the Volvo C30

Quote:
Ford boasts reborn Capri concept
May 1st, 2008 19 Comments

Ford’s new design philosophy has produced some stunning cars in recent times such as the new-generation

Now Ford has reinvented the Capri namesake as a stylish and affordable 2+2 Coupe - although shooting-brake would be a more accurate description.

Not seen since the late Eighties, the Capri will face some strong competition, with the market having become flooded with affordable Coupes in recent times.

This includes the resurrected Volkswagen Scirocco, the forthcoming Hyundai Coupe, the recently green-lit Peugeot 308 RC Z and the Toyota-Subaru collaborative Celica replacement.

But the new Capri won’t be competing with looks alone, likely to feature the 2.5-litre five-cylinder turbocharged unit from the Mondeo.

An all-wheel-drive RS version is also a possibility, powered by a 3.2-litre six-cylinder engine.

So far there are no official plans for the Capri from Ford before the next decade, however a concept version is expected to be revealed in 2009.

One problem. Capri to me means small, Laser based Convertible, with the reliability of a Lada, and more leaks than the Titanic. If they bring it here, it'll need a new name.

I wonder how long it will be until Mazda get their 30x back? The base of this car is the obvious successor to the Eunos.

The gay hairdresser (not that there's anything wrong with that) special of the 90's has ruined the name for me.

Paxton, you obviously didn't live in the 70's when the UK designed Capri was a most sought after alternative to the big bangers!

The V6 Capri's were and still are a most desirable 'sports' car. Very light and with the V6, very quick and nothing, I repeat, nothing, like your Mazda inspired, Capri Convertible with a sideways 1600cc 4 cylinder donk of the late 80's and early 90's!

Bring it on, the NEW Capri, that is, as long as it's a rear wheel drive!

My god. I'm only 33, but even I think of a Capri as a British sports car. Did Australia really screw the Capri name that badly...

The photo is a photoshopped version of the Ford Visos concept from years ago, which was influenced by the capri.

word is that the Capri will be based on a Mondeo platform, so would most likely be fwd, although there is talk of an AWD version. Give it RWD, a nice 3 litre V6 and do the whole retro thing properly :-)

Ford Capri was a name used by the Ford Motor Company for three separate automobile models:

The Ford Consul Capri coupe, produced by Ford of Great Britain between 1961 and 1964
The Ford Capri coupe, produced by Ford Europe from 1969 to 1986
The Ford Capri convertible, produced by the Ford Motor Company of Australia from 1989 to 1994.

The Capri's of the late 60's and 70's from Europe and Britain are the only cars I associate with the name Capri . The MK1's are neat looking cars as this pair with V8's fitted are.

The 3.0S in the early eighties was a good Capri. Tickford also did a turbocharged 2.8 from memory. Bodie and Doyle had the 3.0S in The Professionals. Nicest Ford to come out of the UK.

Except for maybe a BDA escort.

Here's the Uber Capri... German Built Group 5 racer from the late 70s early eighties:

Turbo BDA power

I like it.
Then again, my GF at the time had a cobalt blue 93 model XR2 that was alright; nice, cheap convertible that didn't look too ugly. Went like a slug though.

I'm of a similar age, and whilst I had heard of the European Capri, I've not seen one in the flesh, let alone driven one. My Comments still stand, as to me, Capri is just that, a leaky convertible Mazda 323.

This new edition might just be enough to fix my perception of Capri.

Your on a Ford car forum around 30 and have never seen a MK1 Capri !
Have you not gone to any car shows in your life as there are nearly always one MK1 Capri 's at every car show I've attened.
Inculing Summer Nats, Easter nats, Spring nats Ford day is in nearly every state and small Ford day plus car meets like Knox.
I wonder how many other members have not seen one on this Forum

This is my 1983 Mk3 2.8i injection 5 speed. Also have a Mk1 3000GT and a Mk2 3.0 Ghia.

I agree with the above about the convertable, it has ruind the name in this country. I dont consider them worthy of the name.

I'm 24, and while I don't like the convertible from the 90's, the early European Capris were absolutely awesome! I'd happily welcome a new Capri is it's built from the same mold as the old ones!

The 1st Capri was the early to mid 1950's US Lincoln Capri, then we have
the 2nd Capri which was the early 1960's UK Consul Capri,
the 3rd Capri was the US mid 1960's Mercury Comet Capri and then
the 4th Capri was the UK/German 1969 Ford Capri Mark 1.
This was then followed by
the 5th Capri, the 1974 UK/German Mark 2 and then
the 6th Capri, the UK/German Mark 3 from 1978.
Now, as the US didn't get the UK/German Mark 3 Capri, they introduced
the Fox-based Mercury Capri (Ford Mustang lookalike, same floor pan, etc.) in 1979 which ran through to 1986.
Lastly we have the Aussie Ford Capri Convertible from 1989 through to 1994.

Here endeth the Capri history lesson!

Sounds like the RS version would be a nice companion to a MkI GT

If only they would build it and price it reasonably in Aus

This could get technical as the name FORD Capri not Mercury Capri was only on the UK Euro and Aussie cars.

Wording of FORD CAPRI from Wikpedia

Ford Capri
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation, search

1986 Ford Capri Mk III 1.6 Laser in Blackpool, EnglandFord Capri was a name used by the Ford Motor Company for three separate automobile models:

The Ford Consul Capri coupe, produced by Ford of Great Britain between 1961 and 1964
The Ford Capri coupe, produced by Ford Europe from 1969 to 1986
The Ford Capri convertible, produced by the Ford Motor Company of Australia from 1989 to 1994.
The Capri name was also used by Ford's Lincoln-Mercury Division on a number of models which did not bear the Ford name:

The Lincoln Cosmopolitan Capri, 1950 to 1951
The Lincoln Capri, 1952 to 1959
The Mercury Comet Capri, 1966
The Mercury Capri, 1967
The Capri, 1970 to 1977
The Mercury Capri, 1979 to 1986
The Mercury Capri, 1991 to 1
