Well the old school fords are highly impractible for everyday needs. So I picked new school.

I love big HP turbo/blown efi cars but theres nothing tougher than a big cube old school ride. I'd rather a warm 351 in an XB hardtop over a 500hp BA/F GT, but at the end of the day if its not a second car you have to be able to live with it.

I love both....I've had both.....My last car was a XR6T and I loved every minute of it....I couldn't afford to keep my old skool ride and have a daily driver with a 3rd kid on the way so I bought the Turbo....Muscle car preformance with everyday drivability and room for the kids too.....Good fuel economy too......

BUT.......Nothing beats the old cars for character.....I've owned an XP coupe, 65 cortina and more recently an RS2000.......Every time I drove them people would talk to me at lights, servo's etc. I got a lot of attention from the cops too,but for the right reason!!! As for reliability, when done right there is nothing wrong with old skool...Electronic ignition does wonders for their reliabilty....

Now one of my favourite projects of all is a classic body with new mechanicals....An XP coupe with XR6T running gear!!!! Or Escort/Cortina with Cosworth engine!!!

Have a look at the popularity of Mustangs......It's going through the roof....Ford has cashed in on the classic styling!!

Just enjoy whatever you love driving and don't bag other's choices

Steffo, when you talk about realiability you have no Idea. Put a fully rebuilt old school car next to a new car and it won't have as many problems. My car would happily drive around Australia if it had too.

As for people saying a new car will get as much attention as an old school car, how many times have people hung out their windows yelling rev it up and then offering to buy it right there and then. Let me just say all of the attention is not why I own an old car. Just driving it brings a silly smile to my face.

One of my old mates (very image concerned metroman) used to say to me why don't you sell all of your old cars and buy a new one. They are better yada yada yada. I took him for a cruise in my car one night and after all the attention from thumbs up, girls trying to get rides etc he was looking to buy his own the next day (old chev but thats ok). He finally got it after a couple of years.

And before someone uses the taxi line like in other threads, DON'T. New cars are nice but to me they just don't have the personality of old cars.

I like the comfort (working airconditioing my last car was 26 years old )and handling of my bf xr6 its not the same as old skool you dont get the same feeling. I still remember like it was yesterday going to Ipswich in 1986 in my cousins xb hardtop with a 460 and toploader 4.11 9 inch in it I didnt know much about cars then . We were there for late night shopping that was the cruise night it was a constant procession of hot falcons xw xy gt 57 chevs there were T buckets and hot rods toranas monaros etc lots of hotted up cars they would be worth a fortune now but that night it was like every 3rd car was a v8 the sight the smell the sounds dont see that anymore on the roads .

Old cars can be just as reliable as new ones.

The only time I prefer to be in a new car when im on a road trip,
eg. I Went to QLD in a BA XR8, aircon all the way up in the middle of summer, leather, all the good stuff...
Came home in an XA Falcon 500 with no A/C or radio. longest. trip. ever.

So I prefer old school, just with a few comforts... like my XD for example.
And IMO old school gets waaayyy more positive attention from everyone because of the individuality and personality...

Old school cars are awesome, but their day has been and gone.
i really think you're wrong.

anything up to XC is my taste. my P6 is nothing special, it's just in fairly good nick and it gets a LOT of attention. i can only imagine the sort of attention some of our members get with those awesome X series cars. i understand that the XR's of these days may be faster (some of them), handle better, etc etc, but i really think your comment about the amount of attention the older cars get is far from accurate.

You can't really beat the everyday driveability and fuel economy of late model muscle cars. On the same token you will NEVER get the same attention and shear enthusiasm that old school muscle cars provide. I've owned fully kitted late model muscle cars, and they have never got anywhere near the attention of my XB. My uncle could tell you, he has a blood orange, modified BA GT-P That he has owned from new and an XB GT coupe... There is no comparison in the attention you get in cruising the two..I have never seen grown men bowing in the street to a late model car!

It's not far from accurate. Unless it has a standout colour or something similar on it, most likely thing is only people educated on what it is are going to stop and admire it.

Seeing how you are only a young fella we will forgive you your ignorance.. Believe me, late model iron will never get the same amount of attention from the general public mate.. Just the rarity of seeing immaculate old iron gets a lot of attention.. It's hard to get excited by cars that are based on taxi's that pass you by in their hundreds daily.. Also the fact that a reasonably large percentage of late model muscle car drivers only drive them because there part of their salary package or something.. I can tell their not enthusiasts because a lot of them don't even wash the things!

You talk far too biased. Based on taxis? I won't even bother taking your point into consideration.

I appreciate and accept that BOTH late and early model cars can get equal attention. You do realise that there are just as many if not more people who prefer new cars to old cars? Therefore they wouldn't even bother looking at an older model car.

Forgive my ignorance and I might consider forgiving yours. ;)

I don't mean based on taxis in a bad sense... I mean, when you see the same shape all the time it lessen's the impact of the car.. All Falc's have been used as taxi's nothing wrong with that.

Mate, you will learn this as time goes on.. Our family has the full spectrum of late/early model fords.. Ba XR6, Ba XR8, BA GT-P G-220 Fairlane- Xb GS,Xb GT, 69 MACH 1 428 cobra jet, and numerous others.. Not all car enthusiasts are 19 and only interested in cars they have got.

New school DOES get attention it just wears off after a while.

I remember when the new Monaro came out people used to stand and gawk.

Same deal for the FPV GT when it was released.

The rarity, the history and the SOUND is what gets peoples heads turning even the old XY sixes had a nice straight through sound to it.

I didn't care that the old XT Fairmont had a wheezy 302, rust aplenty and handled like a boat it was an awesome car to cruise in.

And I don't care what anybody else says bench seats are awesome.

I'm sure in 40 years time when we are all driving 0.5L one wheel drive hatchbacks made out of cannabis with an engine that runs on the love the site of a FPV GT will have people gawking.

If you accepted the opinion of the 68% that disagree with you we wouldn't have 5 pages of you defending your point.

The title asks what you prefer, and if you prefer new school, that is your preference.
But as for attention gained, it's old school, that is not an opinion, it is fact.

I can't really say it's because it's common, because I've seen plenty of Toranas, Monaros, GT Falcons modded pretty much the same way, but I don't know they always seem to get more attention.

I was actually quite surprised with how much attention my old man's 5L VL Calais got, at the first car show we took it too.

Old blokes were even commenting on it. Now a VL is not a car that pulls that kind of attention (Especially from the older generation, who grew up with Caddies, Plymouths etc) and it's certainly not a pure breed muscle car, but it got more looks than what any Torana, GT Falcon, Monaro, etc got.

It's weird really. Might be because newer model cars get tarnished by 17 year olds, plastering 90s Commodores, Falcons, Pulsars, Lancers etc in neons, bodykits, bling bling wheels, and all other kinds of crap (That's not saying all are, but yeah). How many 50s,60s,70s cars do you see like that? SFA in my experience anyway.

I've seen alot of nice late model cars, that are very, very drool worthy, but something about chrome bumpers, and white walls draws me in.

You can have any opinion you bloody well like,it still wont change the FACT..
We as classic owners see it EVERY time we drive them, even the younger guys I know who are into turbo skylines and VL's,cream when they see a nice old classic or rod, they wouldnt own one,but admit the road prescence they have, they dont look twice at hsv's and such, they see them every day.

Im sorry but regardless of what you say,a current model car does'nt have that wow factor, especially when the model is 6 months old or more.

How can something you see day in and day out have the same impact?

Obviously it cant,regardless of opinion...

Bit wrong there.... amazing amount of people ask me "What is it?" Being a Landau, many have no idea or never seen one before. I am talking younger people into both Fords, Holdens and everything else.

Quite a few times I have left the car in the garage as I couldnt spare the 1/2 hour standing at the petrol station talking to people. Last time I took it to Car Lovers I was there for nearly two hours but it only took 5 minutes to wash it.

It still gives me a buzz receivng the amount of attention the sound and looks it receives. Love the attention! Even the XC wagon gets it and have had two offers to sell while standing at the petrol station, one bloke followed me there till I stopped...... both turned down.

If someone offers to buy a GT-P or anything else newer from someone driving it, I would tell them to go to the local dealer as I am sure they are in stock!!

old skool all the way! took the cobra to the city for a cruise on saturday night, full of mates that are all late model type people, they couldn't beleive just how many people took notice of the cobra over their late model cars. some of their cars are very nicely done up but are definantly obsolete next to the cobra!

As for a daily driver, im went for comfort over all else as sitting in traffic in a car that goes round corners great but hits every bump in the road hard, doesn't appeal to me, again went old skool, HZ statesman, drive your couch to and from work!

I basically fell in love with the yellow GT HO Phase 3 the first time i saw it and the same with the XC cobra. I would take an XB GT coupe with a 351 and 4 speed manual over any other car in the world. im under 20 but livin in the '70s

Dude you have no idea, you say only the older generation admire older cars because they know what they are. Can you please explain to my brother why he has the ladies chasing him up the street on a Saturday night when he is in his XB and not when he is in his daily (which is a clean car). At a recent show it was his car they wanted. See below examples.

Look at the dude sitting in his late model car behind the XB. Unless he is GAY (not that there's anything wrong with that) he made the wrong choice.

RTSW, I do have more pics but I don't want to bore you.
