Getting the speedo calibrated

As the title says my speedo is out by 4ks, according to my gps. Where would i need to take the car to get it fixed?

Check the yellowpages under Speedometers. Plenty of places about that can do recalibration work.

bear in mind your speedo will change over time belive it or not tyre wear will cause your speedo to change, during manufacture they also tend to make them a bit over to be safe

True, ADR's do state that the speedo needs to only be within 10km/h of the actual speed traveled.

interesting, you'd think if the ADR's are allowing for 10km/h then you could contest speeding fines up to 10km/h over, since you may have actually been traveling the speed limit based upon the information you where getting from your speedo.

Ive always been under the impression that you wont get fined as long as your within 10kms of the speed limit, also dont fines start at 10km/h and over?

I believe this law changed a couple of years ago and is a fair bit stricter then it used to be

That'd be nice, in Queensland it's 10% tolerance, but they don't advertise this, and in Victoria it's a lot less, I think it's 3km/h. I know I've had tickets down there for 63 in a 60 zone, and 104 on the freeway.

also remember if comparing to a gps system, u have to be on totally flat land, if u going up or down a hill, the speed from the gps will be different from the speedo.

I think you will find that only applies for being OVER the speed. As in they can't have speedos showing 10km/hr slower than you are actually travelling.

And Brent, I wouldn't waste my time nor money with getting it calibrated, just think of it as free insurance against a speeding fine.

It is 10% either side of actual speed traveled.

Go to Jaycar and buy the kit for the speedo corrector. I have it in my car and it is tucked up under the dash giving me full 100% adjustability of my speedo. I can change rim and tyre sizes and diff ratios and a quick run with the GPS and it literally takes 5 seconds for me to adjust after working out the percentage error. The left dial takes it in 10% increments per click and the right dial 1% per click.
They are a pain to put together but and hoby person will do it for you at stuff all cost. Once made you just need to cut one wire at the back of the cluster and run it through the circuit board.

id just leave it 4km is nothing its probably your GPS.....A mate of mine got booked for speeding a few weeks ago and his SAT NAV said he wasnt speeding..the police said that sat navs arnt acceptable whaen it comes to speeding....

But a magistrate isn't bound by what the police say. There was a case recently where the court wiped a fine due to a GPS log provided by the driver. In his case it'd be worthwhile to ask a solicitor who specialises in motor traffic cases.

you'd actually be amazed at how accurate sat navs are. when i was in vic a couple of weeks ago, went through those speed check things they have over the hume highway, sat nav said 100km/h, speed shown on the speed check was 100km/h, speedo on the car was about 119 or something, this was a very late model subaru impreza, prob 05 or 06 not a wrx tho

Yeah, same here bodes. The GPS' are amazing.

They are supposed to be around 3 - 4 k's out so the blame doesn't go to the manufacturer when your caught speeding.

No dead accurate just like the speedo. the wire you cut and run through it is the pulse wire. The pulse is altered I checked the distance covered on the gps as well.

bodes is right. the subaru's are notorious for being super innacurate.

Mine was 5 kays out with bald tyres, new tyres brought it back to the std 3ks.
