Talking Car Image Problems

Just doing some thinking in Uni Today, during a boring lecture & was thinking which car do people think has the biggest image problems, namely the elusive Grandpa-Spec, Cardigan image.

Many companies try to shake it by changing names of cars (the core problem remains), radical redesigns (which usually make the car ugly) or by confronting it head on (volvo).

So I decided to make a poll : 12 cars one winner. I also bet that I miss a couple of real pearlers in this poll

Which new car sold today has the cardigan car image problem ? :

My first instinct was the Avalon - never seen anyone young and hip driving one.

Rob_o damn do you mean i can use MP3's in my car, never tried, going to try it tomorrow.

As for the Ford's they probably get no votes because we all love 'em to much, but you gotta admit the Fairmont has got some image problems.

There was a survey once that said the average age of Avalon drivers was 60. Says it all doesn't it.

Yeah, definitely Avalon for this one. Admittledly there is one here wth TRD stickers on the front quarters and a tribal decal that goes the length of the whole car, but the hubcaps dont quite fit in with the "I'm having a midlife crisis and i think this car is fast" image. :

Maybe Ford have adopted the sales winning cardigan image off Toyota.

Camry id have to say on this one followed closely by the Avalon. although if you look at the new U.S model Avalon, it has a lot going for it.

I voted Avalon mainly because my parents and in-laws have recently purchased new cars and although neither bought Avalons they were top of the list for both.

It was either the Camry or the Avalon.

The camry took the vote as I don't see that many people at all driving Avalons. Funny that....

Never fear, the Avalon is no longer after september I think.

Toyota in all it's wisdom are also pulling the v6 from the Camry. Next Camry will be 4 cyl only and the Avalon replacement will carry the v6. The avalon itself as a car wasn't really the problem - the design that toyota australia picked up was the outgoing US model in 97-98 I believe - probably cheap dies and jiggs. So the car was dated stylewise before it rolled out.

Two things strike me as strange in this thread....
1. Someone was thinking at Uni?
2. People are voting for cars other than the Camry/ Avalon twin set!!

(By the way, do they still have the O2 advantage? Maybe everyone else has discovered oxygen as well by now : .)

It was a close call between the Avalon and Magna though.
Avalon is definitely "King of the Cardigan" though.

Camry just because i don't even see any avalons. I saw a camry with 2 bullbars the otherday, the front one was higher than the bonnet and it had a huge one at the rear with a tow bar, it was being driven in the city by a 40+ year old women.

Good topic. I voted Avalon, but Camry would come a close second. Toyota have a lot of work to do in their styling department. Maybe they should hire all the teenagers who designed the Sportivo concept. That has to be one of the only good looking Toyotas. I thought it was funny when Toyota bought out the current shape Camry, they were all excited about the styling. Now they can't wait till the next Camry. Also when they brought the current shape Camry out, they decided they were no longer going to paint them white in the ads. Instead they used their hero colour... beige. I think that says it all!
