Default While we are talking about worrying sounds....

Hey guys im not sure if this is a problem or not, but lately everytime I put the foot down on my car I hear a whirring sound as the revs increase.

It almost sounds electronic or like a spooling up noise, just a tad worried incase my right foot is doing some damage to my engine.

Has anyone experience sounds like this?

Sorry to hi jack, but this is a good thread.

My Mrs AU I6, is making a similiar noise - Sounds like its supercharged - Got the whistle. I thought it was the powersteering, because they make a whine noise too when low on oil. Unfortunately I filled it up and no difference. It appears to be coming from the engine somewhere, but very difficult to pinpoint. Within 100km it has gone from whisper quiet to very obviously loud. Especially when cold.... doesnt seem good

Definitely engine bay, yeah I double checked all my levels of coolant etc
Yeah it definitely seems to be a morning and night problem when the temperature drops.......it would be nice if it had a supercharger but it just isnt the case :(

Could it be an issue with the intake?

You sure it isn't just interference from the alternator coming through your stereo speakers?

Nah definitely not, that was my first guess seeing I have installed a stereo into my car.

But yesterday I parked, turned the stereo down and cranked the engine. No noise from the speakers but the sound was still occuring.

Im confused :(

could be just a loose bolt in the exhaust system..had a similar problem in my mums car...when the revs increased so did the noise...felt like it was comming from the engine bay, but it turned out to be just a missing bolt in the exhaust system after the o2 sensor and just before the cat...

I had a similar problem and got the pulleys replaced on my car. Seemed to have fixed the louder problem but I swear I can still hear a quieter whistle.

Is it under heavy load, acceleration or just idle?

Both valid ideas, well its due for a service in the next few weeks so ill get it looked over then.

No the noise only tends to occur with acceleration, when I level out my speed the noise stops.

hey i hear the same coming from my sr, its not exhaust unless its something to do with the cat, how long do the pulleys and such last? shes done around 160 000.

I replaced the idler pulley on my I6 at 140K but if you remove the belt and spin the pulley you'll know if it needs replacing.

pmpdau I believe that I have the same problem now. It's a fairly quiet noise but one that is annoying none the less. Let me know if you find a solution to what is an annoying sound to describe and possibly diagnose!

In our case, its definitely not pulleys - powersteering - or exhaust

Definitely a supercharger like noise from the engine itself.. .and its loud. Especially when cold. You can hear it all through the rev range. I'm starting to suspect bearings - bottom end

Yeah unfortunately thats not the case here stattic lol, the whine goes through 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th lol. Gets pretty annoying when entering a freeway lol.

God dont say bearings.....I guess it would be a good reason for me to "replace" the engine with a windsor :P

If you getting a 'whine' noise in first gear only, that could be more than likely be the planetary gearing making that noise in the gearbox. Mine makes that sound also, and I was told by the trans dude, that its a common noise with AU's. As long as the sound is not getting worse it wont be an issue.

^^I dont know about AU's but BA's most definately have a first gear whine that is deliberate of sorts, just the stronger gear's in the box. Wouldn't surprise me if AU was the same.

My brother's Tickford XR8 had this.... turns out it was the air intake going spastic or something, so it was normal for his... (I'm not a mechanic...) :P

Mine is doing exactly the same. I suspect it's wear and tear on either the gearbox or engine. I've got a bad bad feeling it's bearing too. Mine's not really "loud" though, but it's noticeable, and is getting steadily more noticeable.

220K on my motor and it's had it's fair share of punishment in the past.
