g'day all, i need some help with removing the fuel pump from my au ute. I've already taken the tub off and had a bit of a look before coming to work today but ran out of time. but in the manual it mentions a special tool to unscrew the fuel sender unit.
Does anyone know what this tool looks like or what i could make one out of or another way to remove the fuel sender unit. Any help would be great thanks. |

At a guess it would be the same as the screw cap on the sedan removal of that is in this link

It doesn't matter if it's different to the sedans. As Whoosha said two flat blade screwdivers with a bar between them will do the job - the best part is they won't cost you anything and they are "one size fits all".

that tool looks good. My setup is a bit different screwdrivers will do the job i had a look today just a turn and release setup quick and easy. Thanks for your help guys.

sorry for digging up an old thread but is there any way of removing the filler neck from the tank or is it definatly one unit?
having huge issues with mine as i have a gas tank in the way... so far i have had to remove: tail shaft, rear brake calipers, move diff, remove rear of exhaust and now remove the gas tank so i can slide it out. wish i had a hoist... is there an easier way to do it?????

no mate you can't remove the filler neck from the tank. Its a crap setup for removing the tank but thats the way it has to be done as far as i know, it was alot less stuffing around to take the tub off to change the fuel pump. Why are you removing the tank i hope its not to change the pump?

The Ford dealer way to do it is to move the rear axle back so the tank can be dropped out.
The other way is to take the tub off and then remove some metal sheeting above the cap that holds the pump in and extract the pump from the top like this http://www.fordforums.com.au/showthread.php?t=11313390

take out liner and then remove the tub. i used my engine crane to lift of tub. i have since found that it wasn't my dash giving false readings on the fuel gauge and distance to empty (swapped dashes with my other xr8) so have to pull the tub off again.first time i cleaned and checked the sender and bent the little finger bits but it didn't help. can the sender be bought seperate to the pump because ford only sells the whole unit for $370
