Is renewal based on the date you first become a DM, or the start of each year or what?

Because I'm definitely going to continue, would hate for it to lapse.

Do we get a PM when we are due?

Yeah, it says from closer to the start of this thread that you get a PM when your DM is nearly up. and im quite sure it starts on the first day it shows up on your user CP
