The USD to AUD sees that come out to about 1AUD, then add 25% of taxes, there's the answer.
Bit of tax on your tax, with a side of tax. And then some roads are still kept in poor condition.

Keep in mind there are A LOT of toll roads in the US on the east coast. It is extremely difficult to drive around many cities on he east cost without paying tolls. In Miami they're everywhere! Many of interstates in the east are tolled as well. To drive from DC to NY costs about 25 USD in tolls! on I95. In the west fuel is a lot more expensive but far fewer toll roads.

They must have been taped a while back. And in areas with high prices like California. Even there is mostly in the $2.50 range now. I got it for $1.77 the other day. That's about 46cpl.

Tax. America has really badly maintained roads (compared to us) and a lot of toll roads. NZ on the other hand has one toll road (a tunnel north of Auckland that costs $2.60) and really well mainained roads (never seen a pothole in my life. No wait, saw one but they filled it up in a week - it was near my house). However we pay $1.70 a litre due to a 51% petrol tax. I believe Australia is somewhere in the middle.
P.S. When new american cars start marketing on automatic pothole avoidance and tyres talk about pothole protection, you know how bad their roads must be.

Watching the news. Seems that fuel is below $1 a litre in many places in Melb and Syd now. Lovely. Won't see this in Darwin - gas is $1.20 here!

I was in USA last year and petrol prices were about the same.
Also the surveyed prices quoted above probably don't include sales tax. All Usa retail prices are ex-tax because many its state based

And it's the most painful thing. Everyone thinks the US is cheap. Eating at a restaurant you see the listed price. Add tax, add 20% tip and convert it to aud the price doubles. After living here for 2 months Australia is looking very reasonable! |

Everyone hates on the oil companies. What a joke. Just because a servo is branded as a major oil company, doesn't mean it is owned and run by them. There is 3 markups from a refined barrel. The terminal gate price, the cartage price, and the servo price. Anyway back to the conspiracy theories.

US fuel is still government subsidised isn't it? 20 billion a year I just read.
Would YOU want to pay more tax so they can reduce the price of fuel? |

No, just less tax per litre. All taxes in fuel were to go into roads, if you are in QLD you would see thats crap. Only 25% of fuel taxes and tolls go back into roads.

Dont bash me for this opinion..Firstly, why does America go to war? For the oil and wars create jobs that help recessions. Second is that Australia is the highest taxed country in the world, possibly due to the government selling their assets of which telstra was the only one that turned a profit, and thirdly, to try and look like they are being responsible, the three things they tax the hardest are petrol (let's all go out and by hybrids and charge them with coal powerstations..), alcohol (fair enough), and tobacco(again fair enough). If your an eco warrior with the hope of a better civilisation it works. But if you are like me and love a beer, but before you crack one gas it down to the servo for a deck, life gets expensive. Whilst the man tries to limit everyone's intake of all 3, they will never completely ban any of them because it's fools like me who get them the revenue. As previously stated, just an opinion

I paid US$1.84 per gallon last week in Orlando.
I am in Hawaii this week and noticed fuel is around the US$2.40 per gallon mark. I don't know if there is a refinery in Hawaii or if all fuel is imported. |

Just in case some of you are interested. I was bored and did some research and here is the NZ petrol/car tax system. Hope some of you find this to be a good read. I've wasted about 45 minutes on it
The tax split per litre (for petrol) at the pump is : 59.524 cents - National Land Transport Fund (Directly used to fund roads - I'm happy to pay this) 6.90 cents - ACC Motor Vehicle Account (Goes into ACC fund - Again I'm totally happy to pay this. ACC is a very good system) 0.66 cents - Local Authorities Fuel Tax (City/District Council - Depends. Some are innefficent buggers like Auckland, some are okay) 0.045 cents - Petroleum or Engine Fuels Monitoring Levy (Idk, some bureaucratic authority) ~10 cents - GST (Goes to the state/central government general budget. Happy to pay this) Diesels don't have any tax at the pump, but they pay RUC which I'll cover later. Overall the pump final price right now is $1.70 for Petrol and $0.90 for Diesel. Now we move onto the yearly Registration costs (I used my 05 Fairlane for this) : $43.50 - Licence Fee $68.46 - ACC Levy Band 4 (Each car will pay different prices depending on which band they fall in. Band 4 is the safest and Band 1 is the least safe. This way drivers of safer cars get rewarded for being both less likely to be in a crash, and being less injured in a crash, saving the health system money. It's a pretty good system IMO. Band 1 pays $160 I believe) $1.64 - Other Levies $3.74 - Admin Fees $17.61 - GST Now onto Diesels (I used an 05 Hilux Diesel for this) : $43.50 - Licence Fee $186.76 - ACC Levy $1.64 - Other Levies $3.74 - Admin Fees $35.35 - GST $1240.00 - RUC (I calculated based on the car travelling 20,000 Km a year, which is the same as my Fairlane) P.S. I've just worked out by changing to Diesel I'd save $1400 a year on fuel after factoring in the RUC. However, when factoring in the additional costs for servicing, spares, insurance etc. the gap starts to close in to a point where Diesel cars really aren't worth it for me. I've been told (I'm quoting the AA here) that Diesel only starts being financially better than a petrol alternative when annual mileage is 20,000KM or more. I'm exactly on the border, so I could go either way. Happy with petrol for now though.
