MYTH BUSTED!! That is totally incorrect, I don't wear my cap sometimes and that hasn't stopped me from going about my official business.

Thats a dangerous myth we had a concerned citizen call the station once and informed us a unmarked vehicle had pulled over a car and the officer was not wearing his hat, he thought he was reporting a major legal breach. Instead we informed him that what the officer was doing was correct and that there is no need to wear our caps. Well he informed us in stern words that he would tell his daughter that if she was pulled over and the officer was not wearing their cap, that she should ignore the officer and drive away.

DON'T DO IT!! This is incorrect.

If my daughter was pulled over by an unmarked car and approached by a man with no official uniform I'd be telling her to drive off as well..... if you cant understand the reason why then I guess you've been living in a cocoon for the past 20 years.

Thats fair enought if off duty and un known, but they are talking about driving off from an "on duty" officer without a hat. Get out of that cocoon dood

If i was a shiela i wouldnt pull over for an unmarked car. Ive been told your legally alowed to drive to the nearest servo or station and pull over there. Also heard a story bout some girl who didnt pull over and called the cops and it turned out that the car trying to pull her over wasnt a copper at all and they ended up sending a bunch of units and surrounding the *****, turned out he was going to **** her up pretty bad.

I could turn my car into a unmarked car tmrw. You can buy the lights of the shelf.

Yeah right, how hard is it to hire a police costume that looks real enough to the untrained eye...... and no I wouldnt be telling anyone to just drive off, I'd tell them to head for the nearest Police station or populated place of business.

Too much media hype and not enough factual information. Yes one guy got bashed on the F3 by some deadbeats a few months ago. He picked them for police immediately and they just smashed their way in. This is the only time EVER anyone has been a victim of such an incident. Well thats what the police said in the local paper anyhow. But hey, what would they know. It's much easier to be a victim of the hype and Uncle Ray's Current Affair Stories.
We live in Australia not America. Try and remember that.

Exactly. There have been incidents in the past but this is OZ and I suggest you pull over. Police do have to identify themselves clearly and thats what the lights, siren and badge are for. If you don't hear a siren leave your motor running until they identify themselves.

You are legally required to stop.. you don't have the legal right to do anything else. However, if there was a genuine concern I am sure that some leeway may be given. How hard is it to stop and wind the windows up and lock the doors?
All these internet myths are going to get people into serious trouble and saying 'it must be true coz I read it on the internet' won't work so well. :

Pulled over a clown the other night in my SV8 off duty after her chucked a piece of fruit at our car. If he didn't see my badge waving out the window, I had his number plate anyway. Whether you stop or not, expect some sort of action.

Yeah ok, maybe I dont have a false sense of security as some others seem to have..... I just dont think we can afford to adopt the naive attitude that only bad things happen overseas..... the last time I checked the good old days of being an Aussie have long since passed.
Each to their own I guess but i'll still be heading to the nearest populated area before pulling over for any suspect looking person.... I would expect a certain degree of understanding from a police officer if such a thing occured.

So tell us the last horrific thing that you were subjected to that will smash our collective false sense of security.

I maintain, too much TV.
