One cool thing about Canberra in 87 was that if you couldn't drive a manual, you did the test in an Auto, after 1 year, you automatically got your licence upgraded to drive a manual. :

I got my license in Bathurst in 1986 and it didn't matter whether you did the test in manual or auto you could drive either straight away. I did my test in a column shift XD manual taxi (yes, a real taxi and it was manual) because its all that was available. Got my bike license in 92 and all I had to do was some stuff in the RTA carpark and ride up the street and back while the guy watched.
