Default Cam sync query

I'm in the midst of installing heads and cam on my AUII XR8 (will document in a build thread shortly) and have a query re the position of the post on the cam syn.

I've done a heap of searching on our AFF forums and found out that the way to check/install the cam sync is to put the motor on TDC on the compression stroke and ensure the post sits in the middle of the gap on the sync.

I'm still in diassembly mode and the cam is the next thing to come out, but thought I'd just check the cam sync before pulling it out. As you can see from the attached pic, it looks way off to the left, but as far as I'm aware the motor has been running fine.

Do I just pull it out and make sure I line up the post better on the new cam sync when I install it? Or is every engine different and I should aim to line the post up like it is now. Apologies for the crappy quality of the pic.
