That's one way of doing it, and just paying an inexperience excess on top of the normal excess in the event of an accident you caused. The downside is you won't be building up any sort of insurance history for yourself. I'm with AAMI too, and they provide a discount to those insuring a car, who already have a family member/partner insured with AAMI. Check this option first. You can do an online quote, and tick the box that asks that question.
