Default Question for Photoshop users

Asked this on a PS forum...received no help. maybe there is someone here that might know:

i just upgraded from 7 to CS (8)...looks good and would like to keep using it. Only problem is whenever i try to open my .psd files created in 7, i'm giving the message:

"Could not complete your request because the layer is not a valid text layer"

Is there anyway to overcome this, as i need to access all of last years work.
I only changed to CS as when 7 finished loading the fonts in the startup screen, it would jump back to windows and close PS??

thanks guys
