Default Extractors Installed Tommorow

Hi all.

I've got the XR booked in tomorrow to get some extractors put onto it.
It's gonna cost me $705 all up. :

The question I want to ask is, would it be worthwhile to get Hi-flow cats put in at the same time? Or do the std cats flow good enough as is?

Thanks

James

Pacemaker Tri-Y, 4001's... I thought it was a bloody good price actually

How much are cats though? Are they worth the money

Hi Flow cats $250-300 ea, your exhaust guy will already have to cut the genuine cats off to put on the Paccy's so no more labour, squeeze him for a top price.

But is the extra $500 - $600 worth it? I could buy a cam for that, and the gain would be bigger wouldn't it?

LOL, of course it's worth it, I've just spent 3.5k on a full stainless DeFilipo exhaust with HPC Coated extractors plus the edit so should go and sound awesome.

No,it would not be worth it unless your existing cats are stuffed. The exhaust place will need to open the opening up to 2.5" to match the extractors collector size anyway, so this should reduce the restriction a bit.

Really, you only need to replace the cats if your current ones are stuffed. These blokes saying you absolutely need to are just trying to justify the extra expense they have incurred.

I understand what you are saying JC as Whoosha is proof that you don't need to replace them as he only fitted as set of extractors and thing is awesome, pulls a mid 13, you don't absolutely need new ones but I opted for them as the whole exhaust system was getting replaced.

this got to have hi flo cats idea came around from the pussadores with the 5l i believe only had one cat ,where as the fords have one each side so basically each cat is only dealing with a 4 cyl .i only had the standard cat on my scharged xr8 ute and it still made 240oddrwkw so they cant be that bad.i do have a full hm system(heads to tip) on the sedan and and still roughly the same kw(ute was man sed auto)

Well I just droppped the car off at Carline.

I walked in spending $700 on extractors, and end up walking out spending $1700 lol.

Instead of just doing Extractors, I've got a whole new exhaust system coming now.

It will be 3" Single, He said it would give the car a deeper growl, instead of a throaty bark if i were to put twin 2 1/4 or 2 1/2 on instead.

He also thought that a twin 2 1/2 was a little large & might lose too much backpressure & therefore torque, seeming as the 3" single is good for 550-600hp.

So there we have it lol, the bloody money pit :evil3:

JC no justifying from me, I was getting a rattle thinking where the f is that coming from and it was 1 cat, so obviously I changed both with the opportunity to upgrade to a much better flow cat.
Believe me my system does feel much better than before,I can feel it and I know TS50/Shane can vouch for this also.

James22 single 3" ? It's your decision and I respect that but just check on this forum with Windsor's do a count how many are 3" ? Sweet fa I'm afraid.
Anyway look forward to your feedback which I'm sure is much better than before with the tri y's. Pity no dyno runs before.

I know your feeling, this forum fleece's our pockets

You could buy a cam for 500...but it'll cost you another 1000-1200 to have it fitted, with springs and pushrods to suit.

Sounds like your getting a decent setup anyway. It cost me $1600 to get the Pacey comps (4-1 version of the PH4001), two new cats, and 3" Lukey cat-back.

See if you can hang onto the original exhaust. They are a great upgrade for the non-XR AU V8's. You should be able to find someone prepared to hand over a couple of hundreds bucks for a std XR exhaust system...

Interested to hear your feedback on this James, personally I like a twin system for note but the single could be good for a bit more power, let us know.

Shame I didn't advertise my single 3" system with one muffler earlier - you could have had it for $150, and it bolts up to standard exhaust position behind cats. Oh well.

I'm going back to stock series 3 XR8 twin system, but still keeping the herrods 4-1s. Why? Noise - the missus won't drive my car with all the noise it makes.
